While waiting for the coil spring insulators to arrive for my white 72 Gran Torino Squire so that I can re-attach the control arms et. Al. in the front, I started taking apart the rear brakes and suspension. I found that I have holes in the left backing plate from where the brake shoes have rubbed and worn through. The right one is not worn all the way through but the plate is gouged in a couple of places. Anybody know where I might locate some NOS plates? Ford part numbers are D2AZ-2212-A left and D2AZ-2211-A right. Numbers courtesy of Tony @ Green Sales. No plates, however. I have not yet checked my parts wagon, but since it sat in an Alabama field for 20 years, I expect to find rust. What do you guys think about filling the holes with weld and grinding smooth. Will it hold? The car IS NOT going to be a daily driver when I am finished. Any good ideas?
Welding and grinding is a perfectly acceptable option and will not affect safety at all. What will affect operation is doing nothing.
How about these Torino Brakes and backing plates? http://www.progressiveautomotive.com/SSBC Ford rear brakes.htm http://www.moserengineering.com/Pages/Brakes/drum.html http://moserengineering.com/Pages/Brakes/disc.html http://www.util.it/sez.php?idsez=12&lang=ENG Swapping to discs info: http://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/RearBrakesbySamGriffith.html
