Was at a small mechanical shop yesterday. They had this in for a $2,000 rebuild of the 6-cylinder engine...... '62 Ford. Emblem said the conversion was by 'National Coach' - ? Check out the license plate.
Wow, what a cool find, KK. I don't know if I ever saw a Ford hearse, they always seemed to be Caddies back then. Funny it had the little hub caps on it.
Sweet. I remember when red interiors were as common as black ones are today. I'll bet people are dying to get a ride in that '62!
Actually for most of the time that they have been building hearses since the 40s [if I remember the decade correctly] the coach company gets the chassis and every thing from the windshield on up to the front of the car, then they will stretch the chassis. So most of the time they didn't start with a complete car. They would, however, sometimes use wagons for the vase models for the smaller and lower income funeral homes.
I always wanted one of the larger old hearses to convert into a weekend camper. Wife said she'd never get in it even dead. I really never tried after that. I like those big old tail lites on this Ford.
