Hey guys, My namesake (CockroachDave) is showing again and after some smooth talking and more than enough begging on my part, I got a very cheap/inexpensive but complete ignition system sent to me by the nice guys at Procomp Electronics. Were I to buy it, the whole package would only cost about $250.00 bucks. I opened up the box and eyed my new system all nice and shiny aluminum and plastic. It looks nicely made with solid machined parts and an it seems an easy install. Coil is nicely wrapped in an machined aluminum case as is the spark amplifier/rev limiter. (2 stages no less! No need for chips!) I wanted to dig deeper so with the help of my handy screwdriver, I did some looking around to compare with my more expensive previous purchases. You know what I found? All the internals are the same as an MSD? Some of the same part numbers even?! Have these guys been around a while or is this a fly by night operation? I wanna say that I'd wished someone made an inexpensive ignition that looks this nice when I was a kid without a pile of money to spend on hot rod parts! I must confess that I have used some cheap things on my car before with mixed results, some good, some not so good, but never have I scrimped in the ignition dept. Mallory and MSD were my power sources of choice when I could afford them. I gotta tell y'all that on looks alone, I am impressed. What do y"all think? It says it powers the spark plugs with some 55,000 volts which is more than ample for my needs and it has a very good guarantee to boot? So is this a mistake or am I on to some sort of a best kept secret? I know you usually get what you pay for but I have heard neither good nor bad about these systems. Give me a couple of opinions and please,.. Be truthful to a fault. (Like that never happens. Hmmf!) I am going to do the install this week and I will let you know what my results are. Either way, I have to return it after the season or I can buy it at a reduced price. I really do appreciate all of your opinions so please be blunt and honest. Yes, even the guy who ticked me off the other day. You know who you are. Let me know your experiences and opinions and thanks. Dave.
Viewing their website tells me that they are an 'international company' started in 1980. The CA operation is a warehouse for distribution. Since their theme seems to be making racing affordable by beating other's prices, I'm going to guess that their product is primarily made in China, Taiwan and the like. I'm not passing judgement on the quality as I have nothing to base it on. Google is your friend if you want to find other's experiences with this company's products.
Ive been selling ProComp for years...and have only seen a small margin of returns ! would I pit it in my 'racecar' ??...probably not....but for a street rocket....SURE ! They're 'retro' distributors called "Redi to run" are great lil units they look like a old school small distributor...but are electronic with this lil chrome box on the side
I love a bargain, but I have read so many "horror story" threads about other owners experiences with ProComp products and customer service that I just steer clear of them, and it doesn't matter whether the products come from China, or down the street. Poor quality castings, rocker arm failures, and lousy customer service are reason enough for me NOT to support their company by purchasing any product from them, especially when there are proven alternatives readily available. Beware ANY company that builds its business on price alone.
thats a good point P...and I can only speak of the ELec distributors....Ive never tried to sell any of the other products from them
