Without adjusting for inflation, what did the Clamshells go for when new?

And those would be the base prices. Add on maybe $1,000 for a moderately-optioned wagon, $1,500 - $2,000 for a fully loaded one. Back in those days, everything was an option, except for maybe the power steering and brakes.

    These are just guesses....
    A/C figure $350
    P/W figure $280
    P/L figure $100
    AM/FM 8 track figure $250
    Tow package figure $100

    Many more.......

Huh. So somewhere in the neighborhood of about $26,000 to $37,000 for a 1971 Safari 3-Seater and $28,000 to $39,500 for a 3-Seater Grand Safari with inflation taken into account. Thanks, If anyone else has information please add it.

Not a clamshell, but this should give you a good idea about the cost of options in 1976.

This is the original window sticker from my recently-sold 1973 Custom Cruiser.

Base price for the car was $4769.40. Add in the $105 destination charge, and that would be $4874.40 for the barebones car.

That handwriting below the price at the bottom is, I think, the original owner's writing filling in what he ultimately paid for the car. The dealer apparently discounted it to an even $5,000. That strikes me as a pretty large reduction, about 16%.

You might also find this interesting. This is the original purchase invoice for the car. The dollar amounts are not exactly the same as what's written on the window sticker, but they did give him about $1000 off the $6000 price. I obscured the buyer's name and so forth at the upper right as his widow still lives at the same address.

I don't know what "E.C.P." for $79.95 is in the "accessories" section. Some kind of undercoating? "External Corrosion Protection" or something like that?
