Speedometer will not register when I first start up, then will jump several times, then start operating normally. Of course the cruise doesn't work when the speedo, so that's a pain in the rear. I live in the outback of Kansas so every 30 miles you have to come off the cruise and the speedo usually quits and won't start again for maybe 10 miles. I guess my question is Where to start. I have pulled the sender on the transmission and it looks good and seems to work, to the best of my knowledge. HELP
I checked the factory service manual and it says it could be a loose connection, open circuit, a short, or the vehicle speed sensor. You really need the manual to do the diagnostics, the circuit checks can be done with a digital multimeter but you need the book to find them. If you have the book you'll see that they refer to a special signal generator device to check if it's the VSS but I don't know where you would find one of those. I'd check all the wires and connectors and if you can't find anything replace the VSS and see what happens.
