Speedometer will not register when I first start up, then will jump several times, then start operating normally. Of course the cruise doesn't work when the speedo, so that's a pain in the rear. I live in the outback of Kansas so every 30 miles you have to come off the cruise and the speedo usually quits and won't start again for maybe 10 miles. I guess my question is Where to start. I have pulled the sender on the transmission and it looks good and seems to work, to the best of my knowledge. HELP

I checked the factory service manual and it says it could be a loose connection, open circuit, a short, or the vehicle speed sensor.
You really need the manual to do the diagnostics, the circuit checks can be done with a digital multimeter but you need the book to find them. If you have the book you'll see that they refer to a special signal generator device to check if it's the VSS but I don't know where you would find one of those.
I'd check all the wires and connectors and if you can't find anything replace the VSS and see what happens.

Make sure the harness connector that plugs into the speed sensor is clean, corrosion-free and tight.
