Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving (to those who observe)! My name is Grant, and I have an addiction to Station Wagons ... looks like I've come to the right place! When I was born, my folks brought me home from the hospital in a hot-rodded 1946 Ford Sedan Delivery ... not too much later they bought a pair of '53 Ford Ranch Wagons ... in the early '60s Dad got us a '58 Edsel Wagon ... so, station wagons are kind of in my blood! I've owned a couple in the past, but my current ride is a 2000 Saturn SL2 Wagon that has been stone reliable and looks pretty damn good, too (to me anyway ... ...), and I'll post a pic when I figure out how to. I've been around hot rods and custom motorcycles all my life and have owned several ... the past 30+ years I've been busy re-introducing, building, and promoting Teardrop Camping Trailers and advancing the Teardrop Lifestyle, and my website for them has been up since 1998: http://www.teardrops.net I can get kind of long-winded if given the chance, so I'll cut this post short by saying Thanks! for letting me join! And, if you think you have (or know of) a good home for my '70s Chevy 400ci small block, please let me know ... ... I just discovered the '71 Chevy Kingswood Estate Wagon with the clam-shell rear gate and I'm smitten! 'Til later, then ... CHEERS! Grant
Welcome! Those GM clamshell wagons made for good towing vehicles, I understand. For around town, though, Saturn wagons are easy to drive and get good fuel economy.
Grant! As a former clamshell owner I understand the attraction you find yourself having towards one. My dad had two while I was growing up; I owned a '75 for about six years. They are amazing wagons. I'm in the market for another wagon and a clamshell is a definite possibility. Failing that, I would go for either a '70 Kingwood or an early '80's Caprice Estate. I recently owned a '70 Caprice Coupe. Tell us more about your "'70's Chevy 400 ci small block". It sounds like you're looking to sell. Are you referring to a wagon? Welcome again, and thanks for joining us! Matt
Welcome wagonut. Send me the 46 Ford sedan delivery hooked to one of your new teardrop trailers and we can be friends! You came to the right place where we speak "station wagon" and love them. What a great day to join.:2_thumbs_up_-_anima
Thanks for the warm welcome, Matt (and everybody else)! Back in the early/mid-'90s I had a rat-rod '44 Chevy pickup (before rat-rods were cool) that had a nice reliable little 305 ci and TH350, but I needed more power to pull a flatbed trailer full of teardrop trailers ... a friend had a '71 400 ci SB out of a truck (2-bolt mains, dammit, but plenty strong for what I intended) and I found a TH400 to go behind it ... we rebuilt both ... the engine got an RV cam, high-volume water pump, Offenhauser Dual-port intake with a 650 Holly and a massive air filter, old-school Wieand finned aluminum valve covers, painted yellow, powder-coated the intake & valve covers, and some pretty detailing. Sadly, the truck went away before I could get the new engine in it, so now I'm sitting here with a brand-new never-fired torgue-monster small block and nothing to put it in ... hence my desire for a GM wagon. My ideal is a '59 Chevy 2-door, but after seeing that '71 Kingwood clamshell on Fast'n'Loud the other night, I'm seeing a different light ... ...! Now, if I had the time, talent, and disposable funds, I'd mate a '59 Chevy 4-door wagon with a '59 Chevy El Camino and make a crew-cab-Camino ... but that ain't gonna happen any time soon (unless I win the Lottery or something ... ...). My little Saturn is great for Gatherings & Rallies within about 450 miles or so, but this past Summer we did a 6-week, 10K-mile cross-country adventure pulling our little vintage canned-ham travel trailer behind my F-250 PowerStroke ... while we had all the power and reliability we needed (and then some!), there just wasn't the cool factor that the Caveman Camper deserved. O.K. ... enough for now ... I think the turkey has settled enough that I can get to bed and some restful sleep! Thanks, again, for the warm "Welcomes"! 'Til later ... CHEERS! Grant
Grant you are right. that little trailer needs to be behind something older than 1970. A station wagon would give you the extra room for camping gear and maybe people. Plus it would just look Kool! That station wagon El Camino has sort a been done. There were a few full sized vans mated to matching pickup beds with another van rear between so a 5th wheel RV could be pulled.
