Hello everyone! Let me start off by apologizing for not doing this when I first discovered this forum. Once I found this site I spent a good couple of hours exploring and totally forgot to introduce myself. For that I am sorry. The reason for my interest in this forum is I just purchased a beautiful 1962 Pontiac Catalina Safari. I will post pics soon. Some of you may have seen it before since I noticed someone posted the CL ad for it in the for sale section. The wagon is originally from Georgia and I believe it made its way to Wisconsin which is where I purchased it from then Kentucky and now it's new permanent home is in Illinois. Original paint and very solid. The ad was not lieing when it said 99% rust free. The motor was not the original motor. The one in it was pretty much junk. Burned and leaked oil like crazy. To make a long story short it's back on the road and driving the hell out of it! I spent a lot of time as a kid in my dads many station wagons with my family. I always wanted one of my own and this 62 is perfect! My kids love it cruising in it and boy does it get a lot of thumbs up. I look forward to learning a lot from this forum and meeting some good people!
Mosy. Sorry to be blunt but lately we've had many just come here to sell wagons, ask about parts, or ask for help without any introduction. Being from central Illinois myself we know your area well. Have fun cruising with your wagon.
I worked for a loan and leasing company there.........I've been trying to remember the name of the road our office was on ever since I typed that, and it won't come to me. It was a major east-west street.
I've wondered for awhile. Mozy maybe you know the answers. We camped for many years at Illinois Beach State park and other state parks in that general area. A few times we took our young son, adopted, to Waukegan for a large downtown car event. I may be wrong but it was called "Scoop the Loop" or similar. Altho there was everything from sports cars, VW's, vans, etc the big deal were those low riders bouncing up and down the main streets. We took our son to his first drive in movie. It was right down town in a parking lot with a portable screen held up with fork trucks. Movie was free. They had free popcorn and soda! Nothing is free now! Went several years and enjoyed it. Clubs parked various types cars in different lots. Many custom vans and of course those low riders everywhere. Funny how lots of them broke down and a few burned when they over did the electrics. Well that wasn't so funny! HA! Most likely early 90's was our last time at the event.
Yeah it's Scoop the loop. I went there every year as a kid. I lived very close to downtown back then. All we had to do was walk to the corner and watch the cars cruise by. The city stopped doing it for a while and started it up again a couple of times. There was always a great turn out but money issues and various other things caused this event to go away. This past summer started it up all over again. It was a great time. Tons of cars from all over the area, music, food and alcohol.
