New (August) issue came in the mail today and there is a great comparo on 3 70s wagons, 1 just happens to be like mine, the other a Country Squire, and a T&C. Might be an all wagon issue, I see also a Pinto Squire and a Willy's, have not gotten too far into it yet

My favorite magazine and I hope mine came today too.

It helps that the editor thinks that wagons are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

The pictures looked like they could have come out of Car & Driver or Motor Trend from the 1970s. And the write up on them was awesome!

I like what the guy did to the Olds, added early 70s alum. factory rims and the upgrade on the inside. Bet most folks that would walk by and look, would have no idea they where never a option.

I am not a fan of the Olds wheels, but I am a BIG fan of the Regency interior.... hmmm, I happen to have one in the Toronado.....

I've never seen those Olds wheels before.. on any model. The 98 interior upgrade is sweet!

If I owned the T&C or the Squire I'd add cornering lamps though.

Great article. The Pinto wagon is far out too!

Yeah, they were fairly rare I do believe. This is the first time I have seen them SINCE the ones that were on our 1972 Delta 88 Royale 2dr hardtop that we had in the 1980s (seen in the pic below). This photo was taken in 1986 and while you cannot really see them, it had those same wheels.

Is it me, or is there a slight typo in the article? It says, "lets start with the Olds... its frameless door window shuts the most solid". Did they mean to put that on the County Squire wagon since it indeed has a frameless window? I also can attest that those 70s Ford Motor Company big cars do have solid sounding doors, so I wonder about that.

The Ford wagon is nice, but since they had it compared to the Olds and Chrysler, since they didnt use a Mercury Colony Park for a closer comparison, it would have been neat to have seen a Country Squire with the optional Landau/Brougham interior in the test. :) Nevertheless, a very neat article. I would love to see one of these factory road tests against a 1972 Caprice wagon, 1972 LTD wagon and a 1972 Sport Fury wagon. :)

BTW - I also love the "Regency" interior that was added in the Custom Cruiser. Sad that GM didnt offer more of this as a option on the 71-76 GM wagons... even the most luxurious line GM wagons back then were based more on cars like the Impala (rather than Caprice), Bonneville (rather than Grand Ville) - (except starting in 73' when the Grand Safari had the Grand Ville interior and was very plush! It had been based on the Bonneville sedan in 71-72), Delta 88 Royale (rather than the Ninety-Eight) and LeSabre Custom (rather than the Electra).

you are right about the typo. I emailed the author about that but never got a reply.

My windows have frames. The Olds is a little strange because while it has the Regency interior, it has Delta 88 window switch locations (mine are on top of the armrests and also have ashtrays and lighters on the rear doors behind the window switches, also on top, not on the side like in the article)
