Hello all, name is Vince. Joined yesterday searching 59 Safari stuff. I own a 59 Catalina and have been looking for parts and came across an engine and transless 59 Safari. Car seems very straight so would it be a mistake to buy it just to remove the trim I need then part it out? Any opinions appreciated and thanks for having me!
Buy 'em .... its like land, they dont make 'em anymore. I could use a decent split bench seat ... you got?? .... and welcome!!
We have 9 cars, the Safari would be 10. Building it is out of the question for me just not sure I have the heart to dismantle it. Plus I dont have the room! If I do go that route Wingnut, and if I end up bringing it home i will let you know on the seat. I'm actually waiting on more pics. And again thanks kindly for the welcome!
Welcome! I AM NEW HERE ALLSO and have found It's a great place to find help, HAVE some fun and talk wagons, with great pepole and of course share wow 9 cars and i thougt i was a car nut ! stay safe, stay cool
Rust-free California cars are such a blessing, compared to the cancer-ridden hulks we typically deal with in the Midwest. I would have a difficult time dismantling a California '59 Safari for trim to use in another car. If the donor car came from Ohio, it would be a different story.
How about if you buy it, take the parts you need off of it, then put it on Ebay and see if anyone wants it as a project car. If not, maybe you could part it out as I'm sure they're getting harder and harder to find.
Doug, Dont fret I will probably do as snooter says and just remove the trim I need so the Safari would remain basically intact, just the new onwer would have to find the same trim i was looking for. Nobody wants to ship it when i find what I need as far as long trim goes so I have to go the whole car route i guess.
Welcome, from another Poncho fan. Can't wait to see some more pictures of your cars. As for the dilemma, the Safari is definitely harder to find than a Catalina so I'd hate to see it parted out and end up as scrap. The more parts that go off it, the less likely someone is going to decide to save it. Plus I'm a big wagon fan, so I'm biased. Wasn't there a guy on here just recently looking for a 59?
to the wagon train, FF. I'm pretty much on board with teej on this subject. However, this is an ever perplexing problem for the owners of old cars needing trim & other smaller parts. Do you sacrifice one car for another? I would say it depends on how bad the donor is. I mean...if it is full of rust holes all over but still has the trim....why not take it and salvage what little else you can. If the donor is nice, even without the engine and tranny, then it becomes a problem if you can't keep it, after taking the trim, until you find a buyer for it. I would have a big problem sending a 59 Poncho wagon to the crusher even if there were only a few salvageable parts on it. I would have to at least take the parts and then send it on its way. Or, I would have decidedly less reservations about sending it to a yard that does NOT crush old cars and sells parts from it. That way, many other of those cars would benefit. Have you tried www.car-part.com/ ? If shipping is a problem, maybe a member here could pick it up for you near them and send it to you if you found the stuff you are looking for. Bottom line.....as time goes by and with the government on an old car annihilation trip, there are precious few cars, especially wagons, like these around anymore.............
aboard. Seems like you have a problem. Sadly, like many others wrote, the more you dismantle the poor wagon, the less anyone else will want it. Yet I see the reasoning of needing the parts. Since most of us don't have the room or money for many vehicles I'd go the route of removing what I needed and try selling the wagon. Then again, if it is really nice, I'd just sell it intact and keep looking for parts. Decisions decisions! I was a lot of help HUH?
yup I'd go the route of removing what I needed and try selling the wagon. Then again thats whY WE have rat ROds and 10 nice cars
It is a pickle. However, if you have exhausted all your other resources to find the parts that you need then perhaps the only place you can get these parts in from another car. I was in this same pickle. I purchased the donor removed what I needed, sold a few parts, then was funtunate enough to find somone else who needed parts for his car. He in turn sold a few parts to a buddy of his. So as far as I know, at least, four other cars benefited from one donor car. Sometimes it is worth it. Good luck with your decision. to the forum
Shipping long moldings is really no problem. I've shipped many Chevy moldings. I put them in 4 Inch Plastic Tubes. I believe the longest one I ever shipped was close to 8 Ft. The US Postal Service will take them up to 108 unified inches, which would mean the cutoff length on a 4 Inch Tube would be about 94 Inches, pretty reasonably priced too. UPS would probably take them even longer. Bill
