We went to visit Grandma this morning (Memorial Day) We had a very nice time. After our visit with Grandma we stopped by to say "hello" to Grandpa. We had some roses from our garden and Caleb had picked out an American flag pinwheel to place on the grave marker. It was a beautiful day.
OrthmannJ sorry for you loss, my father in law( he was the father I never had) passed away 1 year ago Friday at 95, at that age you know its coming but never really can be prepared for it. Funny thing is that I feel that he is still here, will talk to him when I am driving. For the past 5 years or so when I'd call him and ask how's he doing his reply was always "I'm still here, guess god doesn't want me but the neither does the devil" He was/is a great guy in my life, hope I meet up with him Later! again sorry for loss, I'm sure he will be missed
Life can be so funny sometimes. The day after we went to visit Grandma Shirley (Memorial Day) she went to the hospital. She was in such good spirits the day before that I was slightly shocked to hear about it. Four days later the hospital discharged her for hospice care. Her heart was shutting down, along with her kidneys and her lungs. She held on for another week, but finally she took her last breath on June ninth. In the span of just over six months I lost both of my Grandparents. I've shared a little bit more about it here http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/threads/travels-of-the-fury.46361/page-4#post-429285 I am certainly saddened by this, but as the saying goes "such is life" We knew her day would come eventually and now it has. I am happy that she went peacefully, and now she has been reunited with Grandpa Charles.
I received an email from my Dad this weekend. He wanted us all to know that today would have been Grandpa's 100th birthday. He said a few things and included some photos as well. He also included a poem. An acorn is not an oak when it is sprouted. It must go through the long summers and fierce winters, And endure all that Frost, and snow, and thunder, and storms, And side-striking winds can bring, Before it is a full grown oak. Difficulties are God’s errands and trainers, And only through them can one come to fullness of manhood. Henry Ward Beecher He was a great man. He had his flaws. But don't we all? He was a great man indeed. I miss him. Happy 100th Birthday Grandpa.
So your grandpa, he has wings but his collar insignias appear to be USMC? It's hard to make them out, and the wings don't appear to be Army Airborne.
He was in the Army. He was a paratrooper. Spent time in both the 82nd and 101st Airborne. He was in a communications group responsible for setting up switchboxes and running lines from the front to HQ. He was a sharpshooter (precursor to the snipers) which had a badge as well. I can't tell if he's wearing that in the photo above.
Hmmm...ah, 1) he is wearing Airborne jump wings, it's covered across the the top by the jacket collar, and 2) even though I can't see exactly what is on his jacket's lapels, they could be Signal Corps badges.
