I've been upset by the disappearing car models recently. Now, it looks like Mercury is on the chopping block. I realize that many of these models were duplicitous but I grew up with these cars and some of them DID come out with new and attractive ideas. I don't like the way everything seems to be changing as I get older. If they ever ban wagons or old cars from the road it will be the end of the Fox as a car guy.

I agree, ranch....Mercury wagons, for example, were more plush and I like them better than the Ford wagons. The CP's are a great wagon.

Probably have to blame Steve McQueen for that. When he drove Eleanor in his Bullitt movie, Mustangs were popular, but he stamped them as the street machine. When Ford built almost identical Capris to the 'Stangs, they hurt the entire Mercury brand.

Then they started making the Midsize Fords like mine, into luxury machines, which kind of did the final blow. Why pay more for the same mileage and comfort?

GM did a better job of making their luxury brands distinct, even if the engines and trannies were interchangeable.

And Mopar just couldn't decide if they were a car company or a credit lender.

    Big mistake, IMO.
Now is the time for Ford to reintroduce some European-made vehicles to the U.S. lineup, and Mercury is just the brand to do it. Just don't do it half-asses like the attempt back in the 80's with the Merkur XR4ti and Scorpio.

For me, some of the Mercury styling over the years just tried too hard to look fancier than the Ford equivalent (tail-lights and body-cladding on some years of the Marquis vs. the Crown Vics, for example), but the Colony Parks were always a nice notch up in style from the Country Squires. Long live the Mercury memories.

My mom's 98 merc mystique has 60,000 miles on it. Timing belt just went out and dealer charged her $850, and they r trying to sell her a new Milan with there a-hole tactics."we'll give you $2000 for your mystique and $2000 off the MSRP!" Whatever. Mom's bought SIX new mercs since 1983. They should at least not charge her top dollar every time the flimsy mercs break. Each of her mercs have had expensive issues start up around 50,000 miles. A-holes!

Its another causuality of the depression. I call this economy a depression only because it was changed tto REsession because it didnt sound as bad. But it is bad.

Fords Mercury line had alot of great outstanding cars that were made. The infamous always custom 51 chop top, the Turnpike Cruiser, the Cougar, the Maruarder, Parklane, Comet, Bobcat, Meteor and Monterey. Loved the Parklane and Monterey Breezeway models that had the oddball shaped roofline and the power rear window.

Fords killing off of Mercury pains me as much as it did when Mopar gave Plymouth the axe and when GM dropped Oldsmobile and Pontiac.

These lines from Chrysler, Ford and GM have so much auto history it still brings tears to my eyes that these car lines are gone forever.

Even tho Ford refused our money to prop them up like GM and Chrysler did they are just trying to cut costs.

I do hate to see Mercury go the way of Hudson, Edsel, Studabaker, Nash and AMC. But it is what it is.

Well....they are dropping the Marquis etc....I doubt that, even IF they continue the Mercury line, we will see any RWD cars in the future from ANY car company. And I think that will be very, very sad. Hope I'm wrong.

Fox I had read somewhere that the Ford Crown Vicki/ Grand Marquis will live on as police cars. Police use both cars
