This is the most beautiful station wagon I have ever seen!

    http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/cto/2598077453.html

What do you think is wrong with it? And what could be done so as that I can drive it home.?. Hypothetically that is...

    {about 20 - 30 minutes later}

I emailed them and they have already replied. They are going to send more pics tomorrow. I am sooooo EXCITED!!! :bouncy:

    How Far is Heaven ?

-----------Easy does it Xavier. Remember the other vehicles you have bought in recent years. Chicago means snow. Snow means salt..Lots of salt. Salt means rust. That word he said it has some of!-Get as many pictures as you can before you send money! :camera:Sometimes Heaven ain't what you're lookin at.:naughty:

I know...   but just look at it...   It would be some work, but sooooo worth it to have the most beautiful station wagon I have ever seen. AND it's a Mercury :yahoo: ! Mercurys are my favorite. It takes a lot to make my heart skip a beat and I nearly had to call for help when I saw this thing.

I will, despite my obvious enthusiasm, be objective and realistic with this. It will be difficult but it is the car of my dreams...

I will post the pictures they send me as soon as I get them, or as soon as I can get online after I get them. I promise... scout's honour.

Do we have any members in the Chicago area who could take a look at it?

------It's in West Chicago. That's only about an inch from Lake Michigan, according to my map. Good luck X.:yahoo:

Virtually all the big Mercury wagons in '86 were Colony Parks, with the wood paneling. Based on the appearance of this one, I don't think it ever had the wood on it (no trim moldings there...). It's a good bet that it originally was used as a flower car by a mortuary.

Just be careful, X. The wagon's already got problems going in.....

I will know more tomorrow when I get more pics. I will be careful. Chances are that it was a coroner's wagon; not a hearse but built by one of the coach builders.

But in heaven, cars don't have rust, don't stall, and don't leak fluids

    QUOTE from ad....

Needs a battery to start running and when you start driving it shut off but turns right back on with no problem and it does this until the engine warms up. Don't know what that is i never took it in to get looked at. The wagon is made by Mercury and it is from 1986. It also leaks power staring fluid. It does have rust but it is in good shape for the year that it is 1986. Im in West Chicago 60185 you can map-quest it. If you have any other questions let me know thanks.

Boy, Xav....I would listen to Cat's comments. This is a Chicago car that the seller SAYS has rust. It WILL be salt rust.
I doubt the mechanical issue is anything too serious, BUT, I would have to see the rest of the car and the RUST.
I'm over in Wisconsin....I'm going to MapQuest that zip.

OK...the car is about 3 hours and 40 minutes from me. I will go look for you IF you really want it...BUT...I want to see GOOD pix and THEN call the seller and talk to them first. I'm not driving 7 or 8 hours to find a rust bucket or to find the guy sold it while I'm enroute. If the car's right for 700 bucks I could likely get it back to Wisconsin IF it runs all the time after it warms up or if I can fix it while there.

I see a heavy duty hitch(class IV?) on the back. What has it been hauling? Brakes and Transmission need to be looked at. It concerns me the guy never had the stalling issue investigated, what else is wrong with it? Gives me the impression regular maintenance wasn't a priority. It might be a good deal but I would proceed carefully on this one. :hmmm:

MotoMike is right. I think it's a sketchy ad...
Get lots of pix (especially of the underbody/frame/suspension) and take a very good look, but I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you, X.

These photos make me sad. Amazing to think something so majestic would sink on it's maiden voyage.

I wonder what the Grand Staircase looks like now.

    She's so beautiful.

All we have now are these few precious photos of this glorious relic, as she silently rusts away on the cold, dark and lonely ocean floor, never to...
    What? er, oh.....well...nevermind. :rofl2:

X, I knew I would be trotting out my Titanic bit again, sooner or later, and it appears to be sooner! Yes, these pics are of GM rust, but FoMoCo rust looks just as bad, and this Mercury is probably a whole lot worse, judging by where it is. :yup:
You'll think "died and saw heaven"! If you buy a rusty hulk, you'll be praying for the sweet release of death! :rofl2:
    Be afraid, be very afraid!

    David :)
