Hello freinds of the Station Wagon, It's about all GM B-Body-Chassis, like '79 Bonneville, Caprice or Electra. I don't know, how it has to be called, so I just only can describe: After removing the Side-End-Moldings of the vehicle sky, there are rusty traces at the side carriers from central to the back, running down the D-pillar and had rusted the housing of the taillight. My questions are: How I should have to fix the leakage of the roof rack? I think, that the reason is a leakage through the mounting-screws. After removing the rack for painting the roof, there was black silicone between roof, plastic pads and standing feeds. But you will give me right, that this is not a thinkful sealing. If you have any idea, what I have to take as a long-termed seal, please tell me. (I'm sorry - to write in englisch is much heavier as I thought and in my mind you roll on the floor for laughing ) Best regards - Maik
You're writing English a lot better than I could ever write German, even with a language dictionary. The leakage is likely because of a previous owner's incorrect sealing work. I would imagine there are recreational vehicle businesses where you live, correct? They should have a parts department, where you want to find a material that's a tight foam; the product I've used was grey in color. It will not only seal the rack, but the screws that hold it down.
Hello Silverwinkiehobo, thank you for your kindly reply. Bit by bit the englisch-sentences of school came back in my mind, but it's really hard. And after 1h of writing and translating, my brain hurts like an old diesel-locomotive at startup... But it's ok - I will drive and restaurate my Catalina, so I have to lern a little bit more englisch (and something of your culture ) "Recreational vehicle business"? Do you mean something like camping-workshops? If yes - no, there is no one next to me. But I had bought foam rubber with a one-sided tape from 2 to 4mms, for sealing the taillights in their housing. Screw the screws directly through this material may could seal it, or what do you think? Please, send me a link to the product you use. May I could find this or a similar in germany... Hello Peter, ok - but i think, that the rubber would tear during screwing in. Or is that, what it have to do? Clog the hole... Best regards - Maik
there is a caulking which comes in a long string like thing. I believe the trade name slang is dum-dum grey in color about the thickness of a pencil and 12" long. it is sold in a box at auto paint supply stores
Aaaah - Dum-Dum Sealing Putty or Buytl Sealing Rubber - I think, that my inner door parcels are mounted with this stuff - a thin but strong thread mounted inside for a better removability. I will look, how to get this as fast as possible. Best regards - Maik
In germany it's called "Butyl Dichtband" - and so I had ordered this. 2 rolls of 7m Butyl-sealing-thread with a diameter of 6mm and1 roll with a 20m long Butyl-flat-sealing with a width of 50mms. Thank you very much for your kindly help Best regards - Maik
Big ROFL - I really know what you're meaning... Try in a foreign language, like I do... Best regards - Maik
