Good question! There are several ways to protect the rubber... but what is the best?? The weatherstriping on/around my tailgate are like new and I would like 'm to stay that way knowing those are near to impossible to find.

GM has a product specifically for this purpose, part number 3634770, and it is VERY expensive. I have never used it but I also found the following post on a Benz site. I think, if it were me, I would check the GM product to find out if it is the GOOD silicone. It likely is since it is so expensive. Anyway...if it DOES contain the good silicone and none of the bad...I would probably use this product. If you search car forums throughout the internet you will find that this question is asked over and over with few satisfactory answers. It's up to you to decide whether this info is good or bad. I DO know that Armor All is BAD! Here's what I found.....

I've always used Silicone Spray Lubricant. Spray it on a cloth to apply, you don't want it on the paint or glass.

That was the overall consensus at the Chevy SSR Forum, where we had to contend with a LOT of rubber seals protecting the hardtop convertible roof from leaking, and no aftermarket supplier for replacements!
