I want to remove the passenger side headrest on my 92 Roadmaster, my surfboard will fit better if I do this. I have done internet research on how to do this and have tried with no success yet. It seems like you have to either make or buy a special tool, I tried making one but could not get it to work. There are indents on the 2 posts that go into the seat and these need to be blocked off by the special tool for removal. But it is unclear which side these indents are, are the indents on the same side of both posts? any help would be great, I am sure another Roadmaster owner may shed some light on this for me.
I can't say for your whale, but my 87 box wagon Buick when the head rest is up all the way a good solid "PULL" pops them out. And a firm "smack" puts them back in place and then they move up and down but don't just pop out, I've never needed a specialty tool....BUT the whale wagons may(?) be different.
Surf boards belong on top of a wagon. I'm with Tedy. Any GM I've had I just yanked the headrest up and off. Be careful of your chin. If that don't work get a bigger hammer!
The 91-96 wagons require a special tool that you have to make (maybe 2). There is a nylon tang that engages a notch in the metal rods. The tool is a piece of thin metal shaped like a U to fit halfway around the rod, and about 4-6 inches long with a handle. You slide it down the rod until it passes the tang, then you can pull the headrest out while holding the tool in place. I believe there is a notch on both sides of both rods.
Funny you should comment on this after my comment. Old mechanic's saying: If it doesn't work, hit it with a hammer...if it still doesn't work, use a bigger hammer...if it breaks, it needed replaced anyway. My next suggestion is shorten the surf board until it fits.
