Not really. I'm from the Midwest US. My name's Brett, and I'm a Station Wagon guy. Having lurked and browsed here for a few days; I notice most of the content is US built Wagons, which are in my book. I've had a couple US wagons myself, a 1980 Caprice (red) and a 1987 Buick LeSabre Woody Wagon. (also red) -sorry I don't have pictures of either. At one point I had a 1980 Subaru 1600 Wagon, also. My Wagon love started in 1980 at age 6 with my neighbor's (best friend's mom) Volvo 240, with the fold-up rear facing back seat. I'm mainly into Air Cooled VWs, and currently own 3 Squareback Sedans. I think I've owned 8 or 9 of them total, although most of them have gone this way, since it's the cheapest way to get spare parts. While not technically Station Wagons (the Microbus was considered VW's Station Wagon, in case you didn't know already), they more closely resemble a typical wagon than the Bus does. Since we all like pictures, here are my current cars: My 71 Square. I drive this daily. It isn't pretty but it gets decent gas mileage, and is easy and cheap to maintain. My 68 Squareback, when I bought it. It's in pieces now, getting rust repair (new floors, rockers, front wheelwells and fenders) My 65 Squareback. It's a longer-term project. I'm still collecting parts, many of which need to come from overseas, since they weren't officially imported until 66; so, just about anything that changed before the 66 MY will need to be imported. This is the best picture I have. It doesn't look much different than the 68, until you start picking out the details. It's virtually rust-free from California. I wish I still had this much garage space... Are there any other European Wagon owners on this forum, or Air-Cooled VWs?
aboard bsquare. Nice start on a collection there. You don't see to many of those around, maybe you have the market cornered. A few others will chime in soon. Hope you enjoy the forum.
Welcome, Bsquare... Like the squarebacks. Learned to drive a stick on a '70 back in.......1970 - a friends car.
to the wagon train, bsquare. Love your square backs! Those are fun little rigs. Not sure how many of those we have here....you may be the first.....I just don't remember.
Im a VW geek at heart .... Ive had 7 bugs..a.few notches...few fastbacks...and 5 squares....the last one bone stock 68...sold it to my neighbour a year or so ago...my fave was a 65 that i put a Ford2600 v6 in ....still have the motor and Scat adapter sitting in the shed....for like...20 years.... to our home
Thanks for the welcomes everyone. Not yet. I know of about ten in the Twin Cities Metro area, in various states of repair. I've only seen one other on the road in the last ten years, though. I try to get to know the owners, too. Having little to no aftermarket support for these (aside from the parts that are interchangeable with the Beetle/Bus); we're, by necessity, something of a network of parts hoarders - dragging home just about every one we find and stripping the usable parts for our own rides. My 20x30' garage only has room for these 3 cars (which are only slightly bigger than a Beetle). The rest is stacked with spare parts, which also litter the basement. Good to know there's another VW guy here. I had a few Bugs (71, 71 Super, 73) and a couple Buses (60 & 72) before 'discovering' the Squareback. They're a very well engineered, very practical and reliable car. I'm surprised they didn't really catch on. 2.6L pushing a car that barely weighs a ton? That sounds like a fun way to die. A number of people are converting their VWs to Subaru power now. The horizontally opposed layout fits well with minimal adaptation, and it's a huge power increase over the 50-60hp that came standard. I've been contemplating installing a 3.0L H6 from a Legacy. I'd be able to waste Porsches and haul 2 weeks worth of groceries at the same time.
, I really like your red one. I've allways liked them also but never owned one. Only VW I had was a 67 BaJa bug, was alot of fun off road and street legal, and I miss that car
Hello, and Welcome. I'm new here myself, but have a VW background, a couple of westies, a fast back, a greman look bug project in the works now, and a string of water pumpers. learned to drive in a bug.. 71 super beetle. I've always wanted to build a type 3 notchback with type iv power.
Thanks. It's actually Orange, it just looks red in that picture. I forgot to point out the best feature of the car, the Frunk: The Frunk lid (that's 'Hood' to those who have engines up front, 'Bonnet' if you're British) is light blue, so it vaguely resembles a Gulf race car if you squint - although, it won't be winning any races with only 60hp I'm interested to see your G/L Bug, I've been wanting to do it to a curved windshield Super. Are you on http://www.thesamba.com/vw/, by chance?
I am, although I don't really post there, I cruise the classifieds mostly. the GL project is a very clean 74 1303, so far I have the front suspension mostly done, with early 944 spindles and brakes, gathering parts to do the 944 swap on the rear. I plan on running phone dials on it, but for now steel 911 wheels in silver. they look alot like the stock bug wheels, but wider and with the 5x130 bolt circle. body will stay stock, with shaved signals and antenna.
