We pulled the front and rear vinyl bench seats out of the 1967 Ranch Wagon. Though the mice had not made a nest in them, they still stank bad when I got them out. Of course they are vinyl, but the undersides are a mixture of various materials.

Have used a couple gallons of Simple Solution Stain and Odor remover. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3399941

Now my wife swears by this stuff for the house and our three upchucking cats. It does work. But we have not had as much luck with the seats.

We tried spraying it and putting it in the sun for a day. We also tried spraying it and leaving them in the garage for many days to dry slowly. We SOAK the underside.

Still have odor. Not as bad, but in a car, it will not be good.

Looking for anyone who has used any other deodorizer and your findings.

Oh yeah I also hit it with Febreze. Their TV ads lie. LOL

Thanks to anyone with any ideas.

Best thing I've ever used is "Expel" from Folex.
Not sure if it's available in stores.
I ordered it from their site:

Glad to know I'm not the only one with the upchucking cat issue........
Seems like a daily routine for one of ours........

Agree with you on the Fabreeze issue. Practically worthless, but the wifey thinks it works (it doesn't).

An open can of coffee absorbs the fireplace odor in my house, why not give that a try?

I've never used it with water but use uncented origonal, yes. sprinkle it on dry to dry and forget about it for a day or so, then vacume. Mite(?) do the trick, and it's cheap.

Another good sugestion, maybe try coffee with baking soda.....

On a side note, wet coffee grounds can get rid of alot of "stinky smells", I've used it many times to get rid of bad smells but damp I would not recomend on any favric as it will permenety stain.

Crumpled newspaper will absorb odors. Unfortunately, the stink is in the seat upholstery and will most likey have to be replaced. Being placed in a well ventilated area for several days should do as much good as anything.

I used to buy cars at the Salvation Army auction, fix them up and sell them, and a lot of them had some funky smells in them. I use some stuff from Zep Auto Care called "Car Fresh" - it works pretty good. It's a chemical neutralizer vs. a deodorant. Only works on porous surfaces - not on vinyl, leather, plastic, etc. I most recently used it when both of my dogs got skunked when we were at the lake and I had to haul their stinky butts home. It got rid of the skunk smell too (in the car - the dogs took a couple of months to stop smelling, despite near-daily baths!). You can buy it at Advance or Auto Zone (forgot which one I bought it at). Smell you later!

My mother swears that a banana peel will do the trick. Just leave it under the seat with the windows up. Once it dries up, just replace with another one. Eventually it will either absorb or replace the bad odor somehow. Worth a try.

An old ex of mine use to be a costume seemstress in stratford ontario. Some of them elaborate costumes can't be washed between performances so they mist em with straight voldka, and it kills all smells.

put some absolute in a spray bottle and spray your seats, can't hurt
