I just found this and thought some members might find it useful:

Other Classic Ford members will undoubtedly find these VERY useful:

I use those to find the sub-assembly part numbers for my 1979 Fairmont engine, transmission, and drivetrain components, and all the neat info on Dual and Tri-power linkages.

And the shop manuals have incredibly artistic sketch drawings in beautifully clear detail. Even today's manuals didn't have guys or gals that can do what the folks back then could. You'd swear you were watching the tech actually do it. :thumbs2::2_thumbs_up_-_anima:tiphat:

I have a Chilton's "Glenn's Auto Repair Manual" which shows the whole Fordomatic process with clear photos. And they cover many other systems. Fascinating reading, but back in the day I threw away several Fordomatics in favor of the standard trans conversion. They were pretty cool, though, because unlike Powerglide, the early Fordomatics were three-speeds.

If a Fordomatic was a three-speed, what made it different from the Cruiseomatic/Mercomatic?

If you looked at the shift quadrant,it only said "PRNDLo" on my '56 Ford, for example. Put it in "Lo", you'd get 2nd;slow way down, you'd get 1st. Or start off in 1st,and manually upshift through all 3. Hold in 1st, no upshift.
Quote from Glenn's: "The two transmissions are identical with the exception of the center support,one-way clutch, and pinion carrier and valve body which are used only on the Cruise-O-Matic transmission." (The Fordomatic has a different valve body). The Cruise-O-Matic had this white dot and green dot in a circle-2 versions of Drive on the quadrant like Dr1 & Dr2, but I only ever had one of those very briefly as it became a 4-speed manual.

Later Fordomatics were two-speeds in an aluminum case.

    I just forgot!

I can't remember ever using any gears other than PRND in my automatics. Of course we have always lived on flat land.
