I'm no expert but the easiest way to tell is to look at the timing cover and water pump assembly, they are different for the 2 different engine families.

You either have a 351M or 351W. The Cleveland was long gone by '77. 351W has 6 valve cover bolts. 351M has 8 valve cover bolts.

Also, the W has the thermostat mounted vertically in the intake manifold, whereas the M has it mounted horizontally in the block. The M also has the Thermactor (air injection) valve screwed into the front of the intake, just behind the distributor.

So, I'm curious: the LTD II came with Duraspark II electronic ignition from the factory. Are you wanting an 'upgraded' system? Or does your engine have a point/condenser ignition, which would indicate an older engine that was installed?

Definitely a 351M/400; unfortunately, the part of the emissions label that tells you the engine family, and the exact displacement, is gone. But you can see that the thermostat housing is on the block itself, with the thermostat mounted horizontally, and that curved blue pipe with the weird valve on it is for the Thermactor air injection.

So, it looks like someone dropped a points dizzy in, to replace the factory DS II ignition. Did you buy the car this way?

You should have 8 if it is the 351M/400 family.
