OK, first post ever. Here it is. Need some help with rear Scuff plates for a 4 door version (body79). Bought new produced plates but they dont fit. Seller claims original is for a sedan. Car is newly bought, restored 15 years ago in Sweden. Anyone have some measurements? A picture with original and new.
Gunnar, As I sent in a PM. The only source I could find is through Dennis Carpenter. http://dennis-carpenter.com/door-scuff-plate/p/B7A-7913228-PR/ But I see... they are out of stock at the moment. Another source would be watching e-Bay. I am surprised how many times I see those things pop up.
Thank you for PM Jairus. I hope you can help me. I am confused of what scuff plates I have mounted on car because I ordered this (I have body 79C) and they do not fit, my original is longer. http://www.ebay.com/itm/191244105042?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT If I ordered for a 116" wheelbase wagon, how can my original be longer? Are they really for other car that they put in when restoring the car 15 years ago? Also here is a picture of my car.
I understand, I was wondering if it was the wording that was the issue, but it explicitly says station wagon.
I have been thinking about this for two days now. And I have come to the conclusion that the scuff plate installed in your car is not for your car. I can't confirm it, but it is probably from the Custom 300 sedan. I always thought the sedan used the same bits as the wagon. Except for the change of sheetmetal right around the location of the wheelhouse so... logic suggests that's where the differences might be between the two scuff plates. (note that 80% of the holes line up?) The photo above demonstrates the scuff plate from my wagon. It is the original and all the screw holes line up. Furthermore, it matches the new one you just bought! I believe the scuff plate purchased with your car is wrong and probably for a 4-door Custom Sedan. Install the new scuff plate and you will probably find the original screw hole somewhere under there. But, if the wrong scruff plate was installed in the factory there won't be a hole. The only option then is to take the chance and buy a Body Type 73 scuff plate to see if it is the same as what you are removing. But I say just install the new piece and ignore the tiny hole that will probably show just at the edge. It's just road iron afterall.
Did some investigation...... http://auto.howstuffworks.com/1957-1959-ford-styling11.htm Hopefully, the above page is accurate. In '58, the Ford model series were (lowest line first) - Custom (2 & 4-door sedans) - Custom 300 (2 & 4-door sedans) - Fairlane (2 & 4-door sedans & hardtops) - Fairlane 500 (2 & 4-door sedans & hardtops, + convertibles) Station Wagons: - Ranch Wagon (2 & 4 door) - Del Rio Ranch Wagon (basically a 2-door Country Sedan) - Country Sedan (4-door) - Country Squire The sedans in the Custom and Custom 300 range, plus all the wagons were on a 116" wheelbase. All the other models used a 118" wheelbase. Since you have a model with a 116" wheel base, you should have shorter rear door scuff plates than those from a Fairlane/Fairlane 500 series sedan. It's curious that the new plate came in shorter than the one you already have. I'm thinking that maybe it's for a different year - wonder what the scuff plates looked like in say, 1956? Guess you're going to have to keep looking. One thought: Have you compared the left side to the right side? Are they mirror-images of each other? Good luck with your issue. Marshall
Two days headache Im sorry, but thanks. Not how this was suppose to unfold...gah. Needed to put blame on someone else. I believe you are correct, and also supplier then when saying I have a sedan version mounted. Maybe I try to order it when this settles. Also front scuff plates I ordered are wrong, but that will be solved, or I was promised anyway (wrong label on bag...sure). Also sunvisor ordered and that went to hell too. BTW I know you are in desperate need of rear scuff plates Jairos, I know where to get it, interested
Right and left are mirrors. All things pointing at wrong scuff plates on car. Im guessing when restoring this car they did not consider future problems replacing parts.
Who said I needed new rear scuff plates? I like my wagon pretty much as it is. I think you have the right ones. Just put them in and be done with it.
Thats a great car! Im grateful for help and now its sorted. Good job. Btw im not sure I will put new ones in as a result. I have bad relations with this plates now and a growing like of the old ones
The fun thing about driving old cars is you have no clue about how the person before you did the work. We like to think our cars are mostly original, and the everyone before us did not cut corners, but you never know... I believe someone ordered the wrong scuff plates when yours were installed and just "made them fit" instead of getting the proper ones.
