I'd check and verify that hardware kit is correct for that application. I've never seen a proper hardware kit have 'downsized' parts.
Grizz, since this is one side of the rear drum brakes that you are rebuilding, have your tried rebuilding the other side yet? If you have, were the results the same, or did the other side fit?
I figured one adjuster is just as good as the next, but then I was trying to get vehicle specific cylinder links now you can see why a simple drum brake repair is so difficult for someone with my thought process
I have not done the other side. Normally doing disc brakes I would do both at the same time but I always do drums one at a time because I can never remember how everything goes back. I’m thinking I can spray some “kroil” and clean up the old adjusters on the wire wheel. Might be able to get to this weekend
So I decided that it was the parking brake that was throwing things off. The cable is completely seized up. I’ve been soaking it for about a week with zero progress. Once again, I CANNOT find a replacement. I can find one for c20’s 1973-1985 and that’s as close as I’ve come. It’s the same design and would fit but it’s about 2” too long. So here’s my question: can I install the longer rear cables and somehow take the excess out of the intermediate cable? Or is there a place I could have a custom cable made??
Something like this?? https://www.assemblyspecialty.com/c...MIhdGC16CY6gIVMvC1Ch0RwgZPEAAYAyAAEgI0IfD_BwE
I hate it when I can find the exact part that I am looking for, but for a different generation. It's usually right before or right after the years when my vehicle was made. And there's NOTHING for my vehicle available. I share in your frustration Grizz.
I'd say it's possible, but I'd first look at shortening the primary cable and moving any hardware, even if it involves cutting/welding brackets. Can you get pics of the setup, so we have some reference?
So after considering everything, it should be easy enough making an intermediate shaft if adjusting the primary doesn’t work. I went ahead and used the new, longer rear cables, put everything back together plus ran new lines. It’s been taking up space for too long and I got paying work piling up. Here’s a pick of the adjuster with plenty of thread to tighten down. So, gotta add fluid and we’ll see if it stops or I roll down the hill into my neighbors’ house.
That monster image is taking forever and a day to load down. I'll just have to take your word on that. Better too long than too short
