What I'm asking is simple, did any 1980's GM B bodies (Or some other chassis) have door speaker pods (Similar to the ones in the Buick Regals) that I could put in my '86 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser?
I don't believe they did. I think that a 4 speaker system was the top of the line. 2 in the dash, 2 in the back.
I think most GM cars in the 80s only had rear speakers and dash speakers. I don't know of any off hand that had door speakers. The Corsica had low mounted front speakers that filled the car with sound like door speakers. Probably a good thing, since door speakers means more wires in the door loom to flex and break over time.
I prefer door speakers, component setups, is why I was asking, 3.5's in the front don't do it for me, I listen to rock and metal and having the treble bounce off the windshield kinda kills the audio quality. Was just asking 'cause some GM G bodies had 'em in the doors, guess no B bodies did, shame they don't have any way to mount door speakers.
Regal/Grand National is one example. It's called Concert Sound II and includes 2 dash speakers, two door speakers and two rear deck speakers. Both of my GNs came with the option.
I'm not sure why the G bodies are the only ones which had the Concert Sound systems, it's quite a rare and unusual option, it was never available as a dealer car, you had to custom order it. And it being the 80's, with sound quality taking a nose dive after it's peak in the 1970's, not that it ever was that great in cars to begin with, car audio really wasn't big yet. I listen to music a lot, metal and rock, and smaller speakers tend to get annoying with metal and rock because, while there is very little low end with ether genre of music, smaller speakers tend to cut it out entirely.
The Concert Sound speakers were usually (but I don't think always) coupled with the best Delco head unit at the time which included cassette player and 5-band equalizer. I'm with you on the metal/hard rock!
Yeah I'm not much on the factory head units, none of them in GM's where that good back then. Most aren't any good even today, I prefer aftermarket, though all aftermarket units seem to be intentionally made to be ugly as possible. I may go with a Retrosound deck in my wagon, 'cept the shaft knob panel is missing and the replacement panel is a standard 1.5 DIN, oh well, I'll figure something out. I'd love to get me an old dead head tape deck, one of those without an onboard amp, only amp outputs so I can just run an amp to the speakers, but they are rare, and they are expensive. Anyhow, since most modern stereo's have a high pass and low pass built in, I can just run the fronts on a high pass filter so there's a low cutoff, don't want much bass going to 3.5's. My battlecruiser needs something better than 3.5's upfront, I would do kick panel speakers, but they would render the E brake useless without some lengthy modifications. I don't like relying on rear speakers for anything other than fill.
