Well, after much thought and shopping around, I brought home a white/red leather 1996 Buick Roadmaster Estate yesterday! Today will be my day to clean it top o bottom and inside and out! Next week it's time for new tires (finding white walls was hard), new front brakes and struts...I'm so happy to have a big wagon again!
Cool! Whales Rule!!! Whitewalls can be a little tough to find, the cars look bare and incomplete with blackwalls IMO. Don't ask the counter kid at the parts store for struts for a '96 Buick Roadmaster or you'll be waiting forever for him not to find them.
Seems like when they stopped putting white walls on cars they stopped making real cars. And as the white side walls got narrower the quality and style got worse. It was a sign!
Congratulations on your new Roadmaster and good luck with your whitewalls! They surely add to the classic look. I'm hoping I can hold out for a bit and cop some used ones for the passenger side of the Olds. I know where to find Hankook Optimos, but I don't care for the dealer. Keep us posted, and pics soon, please!
http://www.dbtires.com/ Diamond Back tires makes white walls that stay white. Average price is $250 per tire. Expensive but they do exist. I found a company that sells custom RWL for tires. 19-25 dollars per tire.
Be extremely careful with the door panels. Never slam the doors, and always use the pull straps. The panels are made of unobtanium, and are fragile. The lower panels can be repaired with MEK from the back side, then strengthened with scrap plastic from another door panel, also from the back side. The cars look good with 235/75/15s, but you may have to adjust the computer for the tire size if you want correct speed/mileage. From what I understand they are easier to find than the OEM tire sizes.
I loved that Roady or yours 81. You had that puppy looking better than new and tailored to your preferences. The way you've been trading cars back and forth perhaps at some time in the future you may yet have that one, or its twin, on your driveway.
Congrats and best luck with the Roadmaster! That model was second on my list right behind the Colony Park. I hope to have one someday.
