    Hey guys,

I took some pics of my rear window motor and tracks.

I have all of the mouldings and weatherstripping removed, so I figured this is a pretty good view of how it works.
My headliner is still in place, and I have no plans to remove it, so that will remain a mystery! ;)

This shows the motor, mounted low on the RH side behind the taillamp housing and RH pillar.
The motor drives a gearbox, mounted higher up, that runs the cogged/geared cable that moves the window along the tracks.

The tube that looks like a drain hose is actually the geared cable housing...as the cable gets pulled down to lower the window, it needs somewhere to go, and this tube is it's recepticle.

This hose needs to be free of kinks and bends, to allow the cable to smoothly travel within.

I cleaned the tracks and pillars of all grease and grime for these pics. Throughout the years, there was all sorts of lubricants sprayed up in here, so it was quite a mess. I soaked a rag in thinner, and wiped it down. The white lithium grease is the worst...I don't recommend using it.

The tracks on both pillars need to be clean and lubricated for smooth operation. I haven't any lube on them right now, but will before I reassemble this area.

The glass is mounted to nylon glides that ride in the tracks, or channels, allowing the glass to travel up and down.

This series of pics shows the window as it moves along the tracks.

If your window makes grinding noises, or runs very slowly, the tracks need to be cleaned of all dirt and old lubricant. As most lubricants age and get dirt mixed in, they will work against smooth operation.

Hope this helps with understanding this window system. :2_thumbs_up_-_anima

I can't believe how clean that is inside there. Not one spot of rust!

The other thing I noticed is that style of electrical motor chassis was around on old GM convertibles and power windows as far back as 1962 or earlier. The gear drives might be different, but that frame is identical. It would be worth checking some cross-reference manual for electrical motor repairmen.

Nicely done, David. Good to know, if I ever need a sliding roof on some tricked out wagon, I'll know what to use for sliders.

    Jeffrey, you are hilarious! :rofl2:

It's all very simple! Not really much to break.

Just keep it clean and lubed!

    ...words to live by! (y)

    Hi David,
I asked on your tailgate thread if you had done similar with the window and now I have found it. Fantastic, another great help. Mine is severly clogged so I will need to give it a really big clean, bit one question, the cable with the spring that I presume keeps tension on the window has come off. I just can't figure out where that spring is meant to re attach to?? Also you mention in both threads that you lubricate the workings, mention a few not to use, but not what you do recommend to use. Can you advise on that as well please?

    David,

What do you lube the window tracks WITH?

    Thanks for the photos!

[IMG]If you look at this photo up this pillar there is an oval shaped hole where the worm gear cable bolts on. You can actually see that worm gear drive WITH the car together and the window open. You can get in there with the tube on the red grease spray can and lube the heck outta that worm drive on the upper end. You can run it back and forth and get it very well on the top end.
