Does anyone know what year were the most station wagons sold? Then what mfg brand had the top selling year for wagons? (for example 1968 Ford 50,000 sold, made up stats for example only)
Considering that SUVs are only "butch" station wagons, I'd say this year. (The only time an SUV ever goes off road is if the driver accidentally backs over the landscaping on the way out of the driveway...)
i meant in the classic wagon sense. late 20's to the GM mid 90's versions. although I'd consider the outback and flex wagons now. And i guess several small 4 door hatchbacks are as much of a wagon as a vega/pinto wagon
For your information, I've taken both of the SUVs I've owned, offroad. '89 Bronco Eddie Bauer and '97 Explorer AWD. I didn't 'stump jump' either, but they both got dirty in mud and muddy water, that's for sure.
But his original question doesn't hold for SUVs, regardless of the fact they are classed as 'multipurpose passenger vehicles.'
I don't have any stats handy, but my best guess would be back in the "Wagon boom" of the mid to late 50's and early 60's. I believe Chevy was king back then, but Ford was also real popular.
It's true, Baby Boomer parents did like their Wagons. Makes sense really with all the kids they had back then. Along with all the Picnics they went to and the Vacations they went on. Sure were great days, as many of the pictures posted on this site shows.
