Now that the 79 300 is done except for getting the seats back from my upholsterer it's time to get the wagon done. First thing is getting the rebuilt transmission back in. My son helped me get it up and in yesterday. Now just have to get everything hooked back up. Then I can drive it so I can evaluate it to decide what else it needs. So far I've only driven it down my driveway. I know it has a taillight fuse blowing issue and the front seat needs done. Hopefully I won't find too much else wrong.
Transmission is in and all buttoned up. Lights are all fixed and the oil has been changed. It's a driver now. In fact it runs and drives really well. Couple of things to do like fix the speedometer, replace valve cover gaskets and the power steering pump is winey. I took it to my favorite desert spot this morning for a photo shoot.
The whine could be an indication of internal pump seal leaks, or it could be trapped air, even if you don't see air bubbles in the fluid. Jack up the front till the wheels are off the ground. Start it, and turn the wheel lock-to-lock, holding the steering against the lock for 2-3 seconds each time you go against the locks. Do this five times, center the steering, shut off the engine, set the front end down, and let it sit overnight. Next morning, fire it up, see if the noise is still there (more pronounced when cold).
I plan on doing just that but first I'm going to put new fluid in it as it's pretty old and dirty looking.
That'll definitely help. I had to service my '79 Ranchero's fluid, and basically did a drain, fill, run, flush, drain and refill. A bit expensive, considering the cost of ATF (what the factory fill was), but well worth it. Yours, I think, would have had ATF+, so you can use the newer ATF+4.
They actually chose me since they came on my 79 300. I'm not sure what they are. They have generic aftermarket centers and no marking that I can find on them. I will post some pictures to see if anyone can tell me.
Patched the two rust spots yesterday. Tomorrow I'll pick up some paint and spot paint it for now. Come spring I'll paint the whole car. That's pretty much all the bodywork it needs other than some door dings.
