Desperate times call for desperate measures....... For starters, I know this is wrong but I didn't really have any more options as the wood on the 83 has become so brittle ....it's F*****, and I don't have the $$ for a repaint let alone new wood. And it's pretty clear IMO it's not going to sell so preservation in my goal. Again, it's my fault as it was a bad year and I did not keep up on preserving the wood, now it flakes off with just a gentle touch, nothing was working any more....How Ever... I figured on 3 out comes, nothing would happen, some thing would happen, or I would have really screwed things up and would be rattle canning the tail gate! I had no choice but to carve out some of the wood around the plate. Then I thought to experiment with this today as it's water based, I used a foam brush.... Apx 75 out today and zero humidity, left side is before and the other is seconds after the first attempt in the shade after the car cooled down. Over a period of a couple hours I put on 2 coats, now a couple hours after that it is completely dry with no chemical reaction. Best part is that, it's sealed! I tested it with my hand rubbing and no more flakes came off and with a spray bottle the water beaded off and it's sealed, no more sponge. Will let it sit over nite and if it's all good I'll go at the rest of the wood.
Being water based, it should work just fine! Looking great, too. If I do get that 80 Colony Park I will do that before the wood goes too much more funny on it! Thanks for the tip.
hey, hey, hey Looks like a more permanent fix than Pledge or Armor All. Yes, I know it's not really wood, but, just maybe, treating it like it is, is what we need to do to preserve our woodie paneling.
Turned out so good, I put a third coat on To hot for me, even in the shade today...just like yesterday. Starting to cool off now, will putter and take the boys for a walk as it gets dark.
Tedy, Tedy, Tedy... what an excellent idea! It looks awesome, so did the left side look as good as the right? Is the rest of the car ok or do you need to Varathane the rest? Maybe with all this tlc your doing you'll fall back in love and not sell it at all.
