Looks nice. These are very hard to find in original condition like this. https://www.ebay.com/itm/323906787277
That Body style is one of the few I like with that style 1/2 Vinyl roof. Good looking car. That said I never understood why you would order a same (or very close) color Vinyl top to the color of the bady paint as this car has. I would think you would want a contrasting color if you ordered either a Vinyl top or 2 tone paint?
Who knows? Dad's '78 Fairmont was white with white vinyl, and a blue/white interior. And it was one of the pre-approved credit union cheapos!
This appears to be an exceptionally well kept 79. Always liked the looks of GMs big squarish sedans, especially the 2 doors like this one. Points for the pinstripe and the cool blue interior against all that white. The General has made a lot of mistakes in its time (Vegas, Citations, early Corvairs and Fieros, etc, etc) However, the one thing that they did very, very well was the big RWD sedan. Bet this is one smooth ride. Two thumbs up.
I was told that the reason the smaller GM cars sucked is because they had to build them by the goverment but they didnt want to... So they produced cheap cars that they listed for slightly less than their big cars, also made the gas milage nearly the same and they ran like crap... Made it easier for the salesman to bump you up into a big car... But thats what i was told... Take it how you will...
What's also cool about this car is that it features the same "hot wire" technology on the rear window, giving it the sharp corners that were also a feature of the '77 and '78 Olds Toronado XS. I think this was available on Caprice coupes from '77 through '79.
That is a beauty for sure! I just can never get my head around this body style being build in 1979. To me it is the quintessential 80's body style. It just makes my brain cramp when I read 79 and then see this...
1979/1980, what the h is the difference? The first year of it was 1977, and this body style was the same on all GM full-size cars through 1990, or 14 model years. 1977 Caprice 1990 Caprice. Yes, change the grille a bit each year. Move the "Caprice Classic" script on the side to different locations. But, basically, not a heck of a lot of difference. Even the same hood ornament.
The 77-79 and the 80-90 Body styles are very similar, but non of the body panels interchange, and the later Impala or Caprice 2 doors do not have the wrap around rear window, or an engine larger than a 305/307 from the Factory. GM did a Major but very subtle redesign of the Bodies to Improve the Aero, and of the Chassis to cut weight, all to goain the 1/3 mpg they needed for the CAFE standards.
My point was that I think of this body style as the epitome of 80's car design. When I think of a 70's Caprice I think of something like this: Not this: But, that's just me I guess.
OJ - I agree wholeheartedly - and they are both fine looking cars. Just a matter of opinion and condition of which is nicer. That '75 hardtop sedan is a nice body style these days.
