Pretty clean. The white one that I looked at a few months ago was just as nice, higher optioned, and $3k cheaper. When did they go to Electronic Ignition? My 77 LTD II Squire has it, but this one doesn't.

How can you tell that this one does not have electronic ignition? It looks the same under hood as both of my 78's with 351s. I believe Ford went to electronic ignition for the V-8s for 73 or 74. Certainly by 77 none were points and condenser.

It looks spectacular but then again, so is the price.

    oh those innovations

My Mom's 74 Ford LTD Brougham was one of the few cars, my family's had, that came with it's Owner's Manual when bought used. According to that book(1)LTD meant Luxury Touring Deluxe(Lincoln Continental/Town Car suspension package) and Brougham meant it came with a Lincoln Continental/Town Car interior(way cush). and (2) that 74 was the first year for the new and innovative electronic(pointless) ignition. 74 was the second year of FoMoCo putting guardrails in the doors to better protect the people inside the car. Or so they claimed. And the first year of the new 400 cid engine. Which was the 390 made bigger, to counteract the drain caused by the smog pump, and keep the horsepower level at 325 bhp. Read elsewhere that, due to first year problems with the 400, and a glut of 390's, they went back to 390's in 75 and took the lumps of only 315 bhp. Once the bugs were worked out of the 400, they started to re-implement them. Moot point in 78, when the last year for that size car came about. In 1979, to get an engine bigger than a 351 in a Ford, you needed to by a truck. I do believe some Lincoln's came with the 400 for a few more years.

Taranau, I'm going to have to politely correct you on several points.

The 390 wasn't offered in the full size Fords after 1970. At all. The 400 engine was not an enlarged 390, not an FE series engine at all. It was a stroked, tall deck, 351 Cleveland. The 400 engine was not introduced in 1974, it came out in 1971, and was used in cars(midsize and fullsize only) through 1979 and trucks through 1982. The 400 engine was brought out not to replace the 390, but to offer a choice between the 351 and the big 429/460, to give full size cars more torque without moving to a true big block. As emissions requirements got stricter-and fuel economy more important,-throughout the 70s, Ford had to keep up somehow. So the 351M engine was introduced in 1975, and was basically a reduced size 400 retaining the tall deck design. It was available in cars (midsize and fullsize) from 1975 to 1979 and trucks through 1982. By 1975, Ford LTD engine choices were the 351W or 351M as standard (and there is no rhyme or reason to which cars got Windsor and which got Modified), 400, and 460. Sometime in 73-74 or so, the 429 V8 was enlarged to 460.

Trucks, on the other hand, were available with 360 and 390 FE engines through 1976. For 1977, these engine choices were replaced by the 351M and 400, respectively, and continued through 1979 along with the other normal truck engines (300, 302, 460). Incidentally, although you find MANY 73-79 trucks with them installed these days, the 351W was not available in any 60s-70s model truck. 1980 was the first year you could get the 351W in a pickup truck from the factory. By 1983, the Modified engines were gone and the 351W and 460 were the largest gas engines you could get in a truck until the 6.8L, 413 cid V10 came out in the Super Duty.

As far as 70s Lincolns go, the 429/460 engine was standard Lincoln fare up until the 1977 models, when the 400 was made standard and the 460 optional. In 1978, the 460 was no longer available in California. In 1979, the 400 was the only available Lincoln engine. This excludes Versailles of course. By 1980, you could have a 302 or a 351, and that was about it. No Modified engines were installed in passenger cars after 1979. Period.

If you want to know more, Dave Resch (BubbaF250) was a big Ford Truck guy and he loved the 351M/400 engines and the Motorcraft 2150 carburetor. He created a website which disappeared but thankfully has been archived in many places. I'll link to the one I use most here:

The 351M, even with the 2 bbl and 3 speed auto, is capable of very decent gas mileage. With serious upgrades, you can actually get very very good fuel economy out of these big old cars.

Yup, the 351M/400s came out in 71, the first of the smog motors. My 72 Beteor has one, can't wait to swap it for a 460.
