These are rare, especially in decent condition. Seller says it has 49,000 miles and is asking $4,900. The ad claims the car is a 9-passenger, but isn't it actually an 8-passenger? Are there three sets of seat belts in the third row seat or only two? http://akroncanton.craigslist.org/cto/2614689116.html
I love these wagons. The hidden headlights are like a drug for me. I can't get enough! This one looks especially nice however the beige and woodgrain isn't my preferred color choice. I've never driven or ridden in one of these but I'm sure the torsion bar suspension makes for a nice, comfortable and controlled ride. Looking at the odometer and how the first two numbers don't line-up properly makes me think the mileage is greater than claimed. No doubt a well cared for original though. Chris
Most of these I've seen, the 'wood' overlay is extremely faded and sun -damaged. At least in the photo it looks pretty nice. One of the only 'wood' wagons I know of where there wasn't some king of molding around the wood. If you want one of these, you would be hard-pressed to find one in better shape, IMO. ( Of course, I'm assuming it's as nice in real life as the pics suggest...)
There is another ad for this car on Auto Trader Classics, with bigger photos. AutoTraderClassics.com It looks like the tailgate woodgrain got some sun and is a bit faded: Even at that, I've only ever seen one other of these as nice. A talented artist could replicate the tailgate woodgrain design on a computer and then have a vinyl graphics printing company produce a replica. Only the Monaco had the hidden headlights, and I've never seen a '72 Monaco wagon without the woodgrain, unless it was repainted without it.
I love it. These are cool looking wagons and if it had power windows, etc, I would be very interested. I THINK I'm right in saying that the brown paint on this car that goes up behind the rear window and along the top is supposed to be woodgrain, too. I think. In any case, this is a nice one. Mileage notwithstanding.
20 minutes away from me and in my price range, if it didn't have a green interior I'd be on that thing like a hobo on a jelly donut. No green cars or interiors for meself, I have enough bad luck. I won't even ride in a green car, no way would I drive one.
I'm betting the faded woodgrain on the rear is from being parked in the garage but with the garage door open often. Maybe a carport instead. As for the wood graining going up the D pillar, I found several examples of both styles but nothing definitive. The yellow example even appears to have two-tone wood graining. http://www.flickr.com/photos/37573576@N06/4392866613/ Chris
As I recall, the entire woodgrain thing was a 2-tone thing like shown on the yellow wagon - lighter wood on top of darker wood, but it was all printed as one decal.
I agree KK. I don't know how many nicer ones than this one may be out there. Not a whole lot, I'll bet. Looks really nice.
1972 monaco ohio The seller called me and said its' been SOLD!!!!! Too bad, it looked like a nice old Mopar!
