No Reserve: 1971 Volkswagen 411 2-Door Wagon for sale on BaT Auctions - ending February 12 (Lot #65,626) | Bring a Trailer
Was it fuel injected? In high school my buddy had a 74 412 sedan that I spent a lot of time in. It was fuel injected and had more power that a standard bug. It handled pretty good considering all the weight was in the rear.
Yup - fuel injected. And this one has a full 3-speed automatic trans bolted to it, not the wimpy 2-speed 'auto-stick' the bugs got.
Yeah my buddies 74 412 had the three speed auto as well. Another interesting thing about that car was that in 1974 and I believe it was 1974 only, the United States government made car manufacturers install a seatbelt interlock system. I remember most people disabled this things. For some reason we could get the car to run with the seatbelts unhooked, but the pressure sensor on the seats would not let us start it if we were sitting on the seat. So, we would have to lift our butts off the front seats as he turned the key to get the engine to start. It was quite funny looking to watch us doing this in the high school parking lot every time we started the car. It was also funny to explain it to new people that we’re going to ride in the car in the front seat. My buddy would say “you got a lift your butt off the seat so I can start the car”. People would say “really?”
Also sold in 4-door Sedan form (and in Europe, there was a 2-door sedan). They look like hatchbacks, but aren't. Why didn't they make a 4-door wagon? Later on, name changed to 412, with a front-end styling update: And then, in my Google image browsing, I found THIS. Not another one like it....... Anyone have a clue?
Yes. They looked like hatchbacks but weren’t…my friends car looked like the white sedan from the rear but had the nose of the orange wagon
