Love this design - the only true fastback Thunderbird was 1970-71. 1971 FORD THUNDERBIRD**ORIGIONAL 51K-MILES**429V8 THUNDER-JET - cars... (craigslist.org)
Don't remember seeing a 70-71 2dr T-Bird minus the vinyl roof but the Torinos had a fastback style also and some of them would be all paint. Beautiful cars. If ever own one of these Birds and it needs a repaint the vinyl goes into the dumpster.
I remember looking at a 71 when I was in high school, blue with a white top. My dad said a nine year old car would be nothing but trouble.
Best pic I could find of one w/o a vinyl top: If I had one, I might be inclined to put a contrasting 2nd color below the side moldings, depending on what color the top part is......
Here is the super groovy Thunderbird brochure photo. There were 2 two-door models: the Landau, which came with the vinyl roof as standard equipment, and the lower priced (and far less rarely seen) two door hardtop seen here.
Thanks for the photos everyone, convinced more than ever that vinyl tops do not belong on this beautiful 2dr. Just my opinion.
Same here....... I'm OK with vinyl tops if they seem to flow with the overall design of the car - more upright back window; 'natural' separation in the design of the car, where the vinyl top would start, and end, etc.....
In partial defense of the vinyl roof, I will say it came in the awesome Cayman grain (alligator) design at the time!
And, something to keep in mind, vinyl tops were very much a standard period feature on upscale American cars in 1970!!!!
