    Thanx!!!

Thanx for the breakdowns on those models.Always knew there were less Mercurys(Mercuries?)Didn't know there were that many less. And then, for whatever weird reason, the Mercurys got less respect.I've even seen some Mercury wagons being used as worktrucks(worst example was a 65 Comet woodie-wagon being used as a house-painter's supply mover). On a recent trip to a dismantler yard, for a left rear tail-light assembly,I saw quite a few Mercury wagons in fairly good shape.Very disheartening.

what is so special about a 1971 Ford LTD Country Squire wagon?

The current issue of Old Cars Price Guide lists a 1971 Ford LTD Country Squire station wagon in condition 1 at $14,000.00 while a 1970 (the first year) in the same condition is valued at $9,000.00 and a 1972 at $10,200.00. Is this a type-o or is there a legitimate reason for its magnified worth?

    hey whoa!

There's no telling, really, why such a weird price fluctuation would happen.:disagree:Maybe somebody at the Price Guide had one, when they were younger, and liked it.;)It WAS in an era when the wagons were appreciably different from year to year(not like 73 thru 78,when they were pretty much the same)so maybe that one year is unique enough to merit a higher value.:49: Country Squire and Colony Park were both introduced in 1957,and were the top of the line at each brand(Ford and Mercury)There were many lower models of Ford wagon, including Country Sedan(no woodie)and the Explorer(57 to 59)which came with a retuned engine, four on the floor and double-sized gastank instead of a back-backseat.:dancing: At Mercury, the lower models were the Villiager(a mom's car---no woodie)and the Commuter(no woodie and a little more fuel efficient)

what is so special about a 1971 Ford LTD Country Squire wagon?

Thank you for your thoughts on this. I looked back to a February 1994 issue of Old Cars Price Guide. The values for the 1971 Ford LTD Country Squire tell a much different story. Back then, a condition 1 1971 lists for $4,000.00 which is the same price as the 1972. The 1970 model in the same condition is listed at $4,600.00. My guess is it is either a misprint that they have not caught yet or the 1971 has become a mighty rare bird over the last 15 years.

    attitudes about wagons

About ten years ago,I went to Pick-Your-Part(an auto dismantler yard here in SoCal)looking for whatever, have no idea.Came away with bad vibes...Most cars there were beat to crap.Driven till they just couldn't go any more.Almost all the wagons there that day, looked in fairly good condition. Not too bad off, really.Maybe the engine was blown or the tranny had leaked it's last drop.Have no idea...Maybe,before the era of "retaining the resale value",wagons were like pick-up trucks,throw-aways.They definitely are now. This is also the era of "the only good car is a brand new car".Eventhough, most of the new ones really aren't that much better than the old ones.In many ways...I've heard stories of people turning in their timeless classics at those "buyouts" for sellouts.Or giving them to charities.Do these people throw out their old baseball cards and comic books too?..

More or less, I was given the valve covers and air cleaner for my 58 Chevy, so she'll live on in spirit.

Well...That's actually a good thing,then...Whenever I've had to let go of a well loved car,I've kept a little piece(sometimes several pieces)as a momento. It started when the 71 Chrysler Newport took out my 68 Colony Park...The nametags used to be made of metal, and were actually an integral part of the car,you know. Not plastic, glued on.Or high quality stickers...I don't have any VW or Taurus pieces. And we were glad to see the 88 Acura go away, with all it's pieces on it.But our Colony Park,Dodge Aspenwagon,Plymouth Arieswagon and Mustang II all left little reminders behind.:162:

Yup, I have the police divider cage and the "428" keychain (the car number was 428) on my Crown Vic, and I have the owner's manual and grill emblem off my 60 Chev.

Notice how these numbers trended like the clamshell wagons... peaked in '73, then dropped for '74 and bottomed out in '75 and picked back up for '76...

Also like the '74 Chevy wagons, the Ford wagons were made in higher #'s overall than the 75-76 models, yet you see 75-76 models around more often, at least I do.

Also, unfortunately, there are no breakdowns between the Country Squire wagons and the Country Squire wagons with the "Brougham" option, nor 6-passenger versus 8-passenger (or some say 10-passenger) models.
