This is a SWEET car indeed. Hopefully the title is not that hard and it can be saved!

Iowa is a PITA for titles. This would be a parts car, in my eyes. Plus, if you brought it out-of-state, you'd still have to have a valid Iowa title in order to title/register it in another state. A bill of sale is nearly worthless, in terms of getting a title. All it does is show the cop that the car on the trailer was bought by you from some guy who didn't have a title.

It looks like a 4 door El-Camino type vehicle with a fiberglass cap on the back.:)

I wouldn't touch that car unless it had a valid title first either.

I know Missouri sucks for titles too. Might be worth calling about to see just what the story is.

Not all states need titles on old cars. But it would cost to much to ship it to N.H.

Twenty some years ago I found a sweet 1968 Karmann Ghia, from Texas, no title, for $300. I then began jumping through all the hoops to obtain a title from the Texas DMV, and this was in pre internet era. Alas, some old judge in town was a VW collector, he had a fenced in lot full of them. My car was noticed and I knew it was only a matter of time before it was towed off. I pulled the motor and transaxle to recoup the money spent, and sure enough within days it was in that fenced in lot.:banghead3:

I'm also an avid canoeist, and about 5 years back on the Platte River I espied a 14' aluminum jonboat wedged in a brush pile on the bank. After much effort I extricated it, cleared out the mud and debris, and in triumph towed it off behind me. You'd think obtaining a salvage title would have been a simple matter, and I hear in some states it is. I ended up selling it for $300 to a farmer that wanted it for his pond, as the cost of 'legally' making it mine would have cancelled out obtaining it for free.

True, but you still need proof that you got the car legitimately; i.e. a valid registration and/or title from the previous state in the former owner's name. Otherwise, I could steal your car, take it directly to Georgia, New York, or other such no-title state and immediately register it. Conversely, I could steal a car from a no-title state (or any other state, for that matter!), and take it to a title state, get it registered and titled, and voila! I have a car in my name. It is not that easy.

ALL States KNOW what the other 49 States title/tag requirements are. It takes them mere seconds to look it up these days. If I were to bring that wagon into Oklahoma (Iowa and Oklahoma BOTH being title states) and it had just a bill of sale, Oklahoma would require me to get the Iowa paperwork in order before they'd ever even consider issuing a title and tag! A Bill of Sale is useless by itself in nearly all States, BTW! And since I'm not an Iowa resident, that procedure would be exceptionally complicated without the proper Iowa title. And if it were a Georgia or New York vehicle, I'd have to prove to Oklahoma that the car was registered there when I bought it. See what I'm sayin'???

No title = No sale to me, unless it's a parts car only.

I was wondering about that unique 2-tone paint job - whether it was 'factory'. It kind of looked familiar to me..

Looks like it is a factory option. here's a pic from the '67 AMC brochure:

I called and got ahold of the guy, his story is he bought the car from someone, that bought it from someone that died before he got the title. He says he can get a bonded title for it, he's done it on other cars, it's a simple matter. Something just seems fishy, if it was that simple then you'd think he'd just do it to sell the car. Also the price just seems too good to be true, and you know what they say about that. However it's not too far to go look at, which despite the situation I'm itching to do.

The tu-tone paint is correct (option),, I called the DMV here in KY they said the bill of sale would be recognized on a car that age..?
I had to tell them which State it was coming from.

It sounds like he has a habit of buying cars from dead people
