Does anyone have any pictures of the tailgate from '60-'63. The one I have has all emblem holes covered in bondo and I would like to put it back to as close to original as possible! Thanks in advance for the help!
Although the Falcon (and Comet) tailgates would have remained unchanged from 1960 through 1963, the trim, and emblems likely varied from year to year and from model to model. Some models may have had a single "Ford" crest on the tailgate and maybe a "Falcon" script. Others may have also had backup lights in the tailgate. While other years, or models may have had different lettering, different trim, and different locations for script. This one is a 63. Some years, they had separate letters spelling out "F A L C O N" rather than a script emblem. I think the best thing to do would be to look at original factory literature for 61 to find the answer.
This is a '61 Deluxe, taken right from one of our pages.....has the electric window and the optional back-up lights.... http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8116 A note on that rose-colored 2-door pictured in Jim's post..... I do not believe that chrome 'spear' thingy between the back-up lights is 'factory'. Never seen that before. Looks like something the owner did. If you look close, you'll see it's actually two 'spears' back-to-back. Another '61 Deluxe, crank glass, w/ back-ups:
Both 61 Deluxe models, and yet two different Ford Crest emblems in two different places on the tailgate. Could one tailgate be maybe from a 60 or 62 instead of a 61?
Can't tell you for sure, but that 'Ford' crest on the blue one down low between the B/U lights doesn't look quite right to me.....but I believe I did see another one like this in my google search..... Need to find a complete '61 Falcon brochure......
Well here you go..... Looks like that crest is correct, as is the 'Falcon' script down low on the right.... Crest placed about even with the top of the tail lamps.
Glad us Mopar and Chevy guys could help. On the vintage wagons like this, I enjoy looking to find out subtle differences like these. Before you asked, I would have been vaguely aware of changes in emblems trim and lettering, but until I started looking at pictures, I wouldn't have been able to identify which was correct for what model and year. Is there an inside panel on your tailgate that you could unscrew and remove to get to the rear glass mechanism? If so, it might be worth removing it to see if you can see wher the original holes were that have since been filled.
Hya Walrus ! and ..(ive been gone for a few weeks) Ive also got a 61 2dr wag..has the deluxe trim but only the Falcon lettering in the lower right....no crown on mine under the winder as its the manual winder. I'd snap a pic if I could get near the tail...too much crap stacked behind it
Real cool stuff here. Even when a manufacurer didn't change the body for a couple of years they still added or subtracted things to make each model year distinguishable. I took particular interest in this thread because of our 63 Ranchero. When we were doing the body work and paint we removed the stailess trim that goes around the bed and tailgate. There is a gap in the top that I surmise is for a rear window. I bet they used the same stamping for a Ranchero tailgate and a wagon tailgate. (since the Ranchero of this vintage is basically a wagon with the back of the roof removed.)
Yeah I agree with you. I think I might just come up with my own plan. I do like the FORD on the 'Chero. I think it is clean and classy! Thanks for the info.
Hi Everyone ! I know this is an old post but I'm trying to find the trunk emblem for my 62 deluxe 4 dr wagon. By the holes in the tailgate I believe the one I need is the same as the above pictured white deluxe with reverse lights and the emblem just above the window crank . A part number would help but if someone has one I am very interested buyer
