Just got this car and want to remove the body for restoration. All the body bolts came out easily. Realized the steering column must be disconnected from the steering box but it has the column tube all the way into the steering box with no way to unhook it. Anybody have knowledge of how it is supposed to come out? Any help would be appreciated…..

Sounds like it's similar to the 57 Ford I had. Mine had a long shaft that ran the length of that tube into the steering box. The steering worm gear is actually attached to the end of that shaft. To remove it I had to remove the draglink from the Pitman arm, unbolt the steering box from the frame, remove the tin covers at the bottom of column and unplug all the wiring to the column. On mine the assembly came out the top thru the interior, but it would have come out the bottom also. Just had to get the car high enough. Yours is probably the same. Good luck.

I once did a mechanical/electrical resto on a '55 Star Chief, and unfortunately, the gearbox and column come out as one unit...no separating it. You need to remove the steering wheel and shift arm, then drop the unit out underneath. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there isn't another way to do this. The front end will need to be as high as you can get it to make this easier.
