Windows no longer open/close. I've been reading through the '62 Galaxie shop manual and it refers to the "Power Window Relay", however I am not sure where that is. I think it is on the firewall, behind the air cleaner, but I am not sure. None of the switches on any doors work, so it's something common in the system. The other thing I was thinking could cause the issue is the Lock feature failing open. The power seats work, so the manual states that if they do work, it is not the 30 amp circuit breaker(no idea where that is either). I'd appreciate any troubleshooting tips as well as any tips in removing the door panel. I have a feeling I need to do that to check the voltage at the switches.
The circuit breaker should be located at the starter solenoid with wires that go to the safety relay. Follow the heavy black wire from breaker to locate the relay.
I think I answered my own question: http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_mercury_passenger/catalogsearch/result/?q=circuit+breaker&x=0&y=0 So do these thing fail open, in other words no longer pass voltage?
They would fail open and easy to check. If voltage only on one side no good. They are designed that when they get hot from a problem in the circuit they open and when cool down close the connection. A bad short or ground can cause the failure. If they would fail closed your wiring would burn up.
If your breaker tests ok then I would remove door panel and start testing from the main switch . Could be corrosion. There are some schematics online to help with the testing. You could get lucky and find just a bad ground which usually the culprit on these.
Thanks man! I just confirmed the relay is the culprit. I was not seeing voltage at step 3 below. I took a jumper and unplugged that terminal and attached it to the center pin and the windows started working. Part number for relay is: C1AF-14677-A I ordered from Macs Auto, NAPA let me down again, beginning to lose confidence in them For other's, here is the step by step from shop manual(Figure 6 is attached below): All Windows Do Not Operate 1. Connect a voltmeter o r test light from a ground to the power window relay black wire, connected to the 30 ampere circuit breaker (Fig. 6). If no voltage is available, repair or replace t h e 3 0 ampere circuit breaker or the connecting black wire. 2. Connect a voltmeter from a ground to the red wire terminal of the power window relay. If no volt- age is available, repair or replace the ignition switch or the red wire from the ignition switch to the relay. 3. Connect a voltmeter from a ground to the remaining terminal (black wire) of the power window re- lay (Fig. 6). If no voltage is available, replace the power window relay. 4. Check the black wire at the master control switch for voltage. If no voltage is available, repair or re- place the black wire from the master control switch to the power window relay. 5. At this point the trouble caus- ing all windows not to operate should have been found and corrected. The chances of having all of the control switches, ground circuit breakers, switch to motor wires, or motors de- fective at the same time are very remote. The power window, power seat, and convertible top electrical systems are connected through the same 30 ampere circuit breaker. If failure occurs in all the systems at the same time, the 30 ampere circuit breaker is probably the cause. New part installed and windows now work again! One thing about the replacement relay is the terminals were a bit wider so I had to do a little filing to get one of the plugs to go.
Hi, Were you able to locate an actual new relay? I have a '68 CP and I had to go the junkyard route to find one. I could have adapted another relay but I didn't want to butcher the wiring.
FOund one through Macs Auto: http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_t...erbird-power-window-safety-relay-1961-66.html
