So the waygone has a couple sticky lifters after sittin in that pole barn for 12 years. Thinking about a possible cam and lifter swap. Any ideas? I'd like a little more power but don't want to give up mileage. I plan on using this waygone to travel the way it was intended!
I think it's safe to say it's 5.0 307 in your 84 unless some where in the cars life the engine has been swapped. Bellow is a 5.0, 307 that was the standard engine, a Oldsmobile engine. Oil filler in front of engine, alternator on drivers side, A/C compressor on passenger side..... Chevy 5.0, 305, completely a different engine inside and out........ Oil filler would be on driver side valve cover, Alternator on passenger side, A/C on drivers side........ Sorry, I can't help you with your exact question though.
How far do you want to go with this? I don't know how much you'll get from a cam change with those heads on there (assuming it is SBC). You might search around for some 305HO heads or 305 Vortec heads (requires some more work though) to complement that cam.
Mine is in fact a 305 chevy, from the factory(special order?)oil fill in drivers valve cover and 4 bolt valve covers(chevy style)
and as far as how far I want to go a 350 or383 may eventually end up in here. it only has 18000 miles on so I figured I've got a while just don't wanna deal with lifter tick from 2 sticky lifters, and thought maybe a cam to liven it up little
Well you can give it a shot with a mild cam. Just don't expect magic with those heads. I've had good luck with the Comp Cams Extreme Energy camshafts. Might be worth a call to them to see what they think. I think you'll be looking for high lift and short duration.
Seems foolish to mess with it with only 18,000 miles on it. Give the fuel tank a drink of Miricle Oil. Change oil and add some Miricle Oil or other crank case cleaner to the crank case. On my 1955 Chevy wagon with 305 we replaced the cam with an RV cam and Camaro 305 big valve heads.
Yea I am split as to what to suggest. I kinda think if you want more power just put a bigger engine in. A stock cam should give you the best mileage while the bigger engine would give you more power. But your current engine has but 18K miles. So seems kind of a waste to take it out. That and there is the argument between trying to get better gas mileage vs getting more power. They don't usually go together.
I always thought with a bigger engine you could go faster and move a heavier load which means if you get there sooner it should use less gas!
All joking aside, you are partially right. If you have a bigger engine it should have to work less hard and potentially give better MPG. Problem is most people given that extra hp tend to use it ruining any MPG gains.
I was joking yet I also know it is partially true and also true that any car I've owned with more power seemed to get less fuel mileage!
yeah,i'm on my second tank with the marvel mystery, half a quart in the oil for 500 miles and just did an oil change this am.
Just a thought, I would stay in the low to mid .400 lift cam if you plan on running stock valve springs.
