Hi this is Nick from Milton, Fl. I have an 1984 chevy caprice estate, 305 v8 It has air conditioning in it but it is not hooked up all the way(hoses are not connected) I have no desire to get the ac going in it again however I would love the extra space in the engine compartment, will the car run any different if I remove all ac components(hoses, compressors, wires, etc) Or should I leave it be? If the anwser is yes I can remove it all ac parts will go to the first person for free, pick up or if they pay for shipping. Just let me know I appreciate any advice. God Bless!

:Welcome: Howdy, I've been told the stresses on the crank bearing aren't even if you take the AC compressor off and the belts are all pulling from one side. The reason the alternator on some cars is on the passenger's side if you don't have AC and have a power steering pump. I see it done all the time and it doesn't seem to be a problem but over time I guess it possibly could be.

If you decide to go this route, my compresser is shot in my 87 Caprice Estate, and I'd be interested in taking yours off your hands. I'm guessing it's a harrison as every one I've ever seen is.

I don't think there will be any negative problems if you remove the AC components. First of all, it will cool better without the condenser. As for the stress on the crankshaft, I don't think this would be an issue, because when the compressor is off, it is just free wheeling, as the clutch is not engaged. Therefore, removing it would be the same thing as leaving the comp "off" all the time but on the car.

Take it all off with no worries other than resale. The amount if stress the a/c or any other accessory put on the crankshaft main bearing is trivial, especially with properly tensioned belts.
I'd have a look at how the belts will be routed without the compressor before tearing into things to be sure the new path of the shorter belt doesn't interfere with anything else.

Exactly...you may need new mounting brackets for alternator and power steering and water pump if the A/C compressor belt drives any one of these.
