Ever since I moved to San Francisco in July 2007, I have been wondering if there are any vintage car shows in the Bay Area. I am especially interested in any that feature wagons. Please let me know!

Try looking at Hemmings Motor News website. Or grab a copy at a newsstand. They have listings of events by State. I'm sure there are plenty of great shows on the west coast.

Last Saturday, I attended the swap meet at Turlock, CA, south of Modesto. It was a huge event--it filled up the entire Stanislaus County Fairgrounds. It was my first ever swap meet. It was full of guys selling classic cars, car parts, car memorabilia, old (and new) Haynes car repair manuals, toy/model cars, you name it, ANYTHING that has to do with cars. It was a veritable flea market of old cars and car parts and car stuff.

There were a few nice wagons--a near-mint 1966 Chevelle Malibu wagon (turquoise), 1966 Impala wagon, 1958 Mercury Comet wagon, 1957 Chevy wagons, several woodies, and many other 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s wagons in various conditions, from near-mint to very rough without engines or major parts missing. But no 1978 Chrysler LeBaron Town & Countrys!

Even though I did not buy a car (or car parts), I met some very friendly older guys and we talked wagons (they had their wagons there for sale). I bought an old Chrysler K-car Haynes repair manual and an old Marathon map of Indiana (from when I was a child and Marathon had state maps in their gas stations). But my biggest find (and surprising bargain) was an old large-scale model of a Winnebago Indian motorhome, with an opening roof and a nearly complete interior (with a naked female doll and her husband inside!) for only $30! It was a toy from the late 1960s or early 1970s, a veritable rolling dollhouse. These are very hard to find, and on eBay, they go over a hundred or more dollars.

It was worth my 2-hour drive from San Francisco to Turlock, CA!
