Hi guys/gals. I got my Caprice sedan home the other day and very pleased with it... I have been tinkering with it some and have found some issues that need addressed.

Poking around the hood today and I discoved a couple of unpleasant things. The car had set for a little while and apparently some mice ( or chipmunks or something) had taken advantage of it.

There is one wire directly under the air cleaner housing on the passenger side that has ALL of the insulation off of it. I am wondering what this wire functions and if its easily replaceable? I dont know, it may have just overheated, but there are no signs below it that show it melted... this appears to have been like this for awhile. I think it was chewed off by mice... 4 inches back from this is some underhood insulation that they tore off.... I am wondering if its unsafe to drive like this? I dont want it shorting out and cause more damage....

and some of this plastic stuff around the wires is very brittle, which exposed some of the wires... to be victims to mice!

I am not sure what to do. I am hoping someone with a 305 engine car of this era will know more.... OR if anyone can direct me to a good Chevy site. Thanks in advance.

If the copper wire is ok I would solder the wire then tape it.

Yeah, its still there... at least a few strands of it. :banghead3:
I dont think it was a melted wire, because there is not even a sign of any insulation. It appears this was done a good while ago. I wonder if I can test it to see if any power is currently going through it? I would like to know what its for, but so far no luck.

Sign up over here, they have great repair guides and diagrams.
I have a Factory GM manual for a 94-96 but I would need more info, even if the same part is there on mine. It looks like it's coming out of a sensor/switch in the manifold, right?
Perhaps some sort of exhaust gas recirculation solenoid thingy or manifold temp?

    Google books might have something:

Thanks! Its a 1991 Caprice Classic with the 305 FI V8. I really appreciate it!

Several have said for me to just wrap it with electrical tape, but I am not sure if where its been chewed if it has shorted out somewhere and caused it to burn, but there is no residue below it... I am guessing the mouse ate all of the insulation off of it. I didnt want it to overheat again (if it even did the first time). I dont think it was overheated... I think a mouse chewed ALL of the insulation from it. There is also a large area of the hood insulation gone directly above that area where the mouse/mice took it away. It appears to have been like that for awhile.... I drove it home 40 miles that that and there were no problems. I am assuming its been like that for a long time, but I dont want any future problems from it.

    Thanks again!
