Ok, According to pretty much all my sources, my '88 LeSabre war cruiser's VR is IN the alternator. According to the Haynes book, it's somewhere outside the alt. According to AutoZone's website, it's located on the passenger side of the vehicle inside the alternator, except for the fact that the alternator is on the driver's side....I'm pretty well confused at this point. Which is it? I thought it was inside the alternator as well, but I could be wrong on this? It's just a standard GM, V8 307. Anybody have any ideas? If there is a regulator outside somewheres, a pic would REALLY help me out. Thanks!!
The regulator is in the alternator, not on a firewall or anything like that. What is the issue you are having that you're looking for the regulator? The alternator you have is very simple, if you're troubleshooting a problem it shouldn't be very hard to figure out. If you need wiring diagrams or anything let me know. G
No, cyn....older cars had the regulator separate from the alternator or, in even older cars, separated from the generator. They were usually located under the hood somewhere like the inside of the fender or the firewall. Newer model cars have the regulator incorporated into the alternator as one unit. There is no particular year that this occurred and models varied greatly as to when they went to the new system. IIRC....most switched over in the 70's-80's but don't hold me to that.
Chrysler used external regulators probably longer than anyone, well into the 80s. And, yes, you can test just the regulator, but know what you're doing or have someone that does do it for you as you can do mucho damage if it is not done right.
DG....cyn has a post on the GenTech section called "Low Voltage" I believe it is. She needs help and we should be addressing her problem in her thread so she can follow it. She is posting in other threads, like here, trying to get answers to solve her problem. She is new and did the right thing in posting her own thread and has received some good responses but maybe she tried those fixes and they didn't work. Anyway....I know you are pretty good with the electrical car stuff so maybe you could help her over at her thread.
low voltgage Thanks. I've only had my wagon 2 months - I can't wait till I get this low voltage thing figured out. Then I will be on to the next project!!!!
Ok - so the lady at the parts place I use said that they can't check the voltage regulator but when she keyed in the info the comp. said to check the fuse! So - I will check the fuse. Not to worry if this does not work, I will be posting again for help.
