1948 Mercury Model 89M Woodie Wagon for sale on BaT Auctions - ending June 19 (Lot #110,975) | Bring a Trailer pretty wagon
I'm normally not into wagons older than the 50's, but this one is absolutely beautiful. - Was part of the Nick Alexander collection that was sold off in 2010 or 2011......... I believe Nick Alexander is the son of Ben Alexander, who was an actor and also owned 2 Ford dealerships, one in L.A., and one in the San Francisco bay area. Nick Alexander owns a (self-named) BMW/Mini dealership near downtown L.A.
Ben Alexander was Joe Fridays sidekick on the 1950’s Dragnet series. Died fairly young at 58 (1969) Ran both dealerships from 1953 until his death. Thank goodness they drove Fords in those dragnets too
1948 Mercury Series 89M Station Wagon Chassis 899A2147090 (conceptcarz.com) This Mercury sold for $143,000 in 2009
Wiki lists Mr Alexander's cause of death as heart attack. My Dad was born in 1917 and cigarettes and steaks killed a lot of his friends in their 50s and early 60s. A shame, those men lived thru the depression, WW 2, and died too young.
I have a gracious living book that Lincoln would publish for their customers. This one from 1963 has a steak recipe in there where you rub the steak in butter 24 hours before cooking. Sadly smoking was glorified, drinking and fine foods were swanky and a lot of that generation as you rightly point out made it through the depression and WWII and enjoyed the spoils of their success. My dad was born in ‘19 and I have always admired folks like your dad and mine. They truly were the greatest generation. They knew sacrifice, and appreciated their success. Could you imagine asking this generation to endure meatless Tuesdays , or gas rationing? They’d be wining on their electronic Tom Toms on Facebook how put upon they are. No that was a once in a lifetime generation of hardy men and women. Sadly we are living in a time where we objectify the new generation of the innocuous “person”. Sorry for the rambling, but I have the time, as I’m off for our Holiday!
