Oh, my. It has been a while since we have run across one of these really unpopular GM models. The interior looks surprisingly nice. But who would want it? 1978 Buick Century Limited - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle... (craigslist.org)
Yeah, the rear end styling on these is a little odd. Sort of as if it was rolled backward into a belt sander set at 40 degrees or something. I always thought that angle at the back would severely affect its cargo holding ability too. It probably holds more than a sedan, but it kind of negates the overall utility of it. However, in that condition, I think $3,500 for a V6 is a tad on the high side for one of these. The interior is decent enough, but it looks like the carpet on the driver's side needs a good cleaning. It's funny how some of those 70s and 80s plastics fade to weird colours though.
From what I have read, the rear design was due to the fact that these were intended to be hatchbacks, but for whatever reasons, the hatchback idea was ditched late in the design process, so we got this. It was only two years (1978 and 1979) until GM changed the design to a conventional notchback design and sales took off for the 1980 Century and Cutlass sedans.
What's even weirder is that Buick/Olds kept the 2 dr. sedans of this bodystyle into 1980 when the 4 doors went to the sheer look. I've only seen one of the '80 Century 2 dr. sedans in this bodystyle in all I can remember, and that was back in 1991.
And up pops another of these ugly ducklings. 1979 BUICK FASTBACK - auto parts - by dealer - vehicle automotive... (craigslist.org)
Man, if you had one of these, you would be in hog heaven with these two parts cars. Especially the second one, as it looks pretty straight.
Yeah but at the almost $10,500.00 asking price of the brown one, that is a very expensive parts car! And the ad satates "engine sold" ?
Probably paid the owner $200 crusher weight for it. What a ridiculous price. Hope a ‘68 LeSabre falls on it.
No, because a '68 LeSabre doesn't deserve that kind of treatment. But, I wouldn't shed a tear if the Century dropped on the junkyard owner's foot....
This guy must be doing some heavy duty narcotics to think that thing is worth that kind of money. I swear, some people think if a car is any older than about 25-30 years old that it's worth a literal goldmine. Today's market is increasingly pathetic and annoying.
Well I guess you’re onto something there Andrew. A ‘68 Buick never hurt anybody. Yeah maybe his foot.
