Hard to believe one of these survives 25 years later. For Sale Classic 1997 Pontiac Sun fire 2 door coupe - cars & trucks... (craigslist.org)
I still see one of these in ads every once in a blue moon. I don't know if it's just because I'm cheap, but $5,150 seems slightly high for that car, even with 87k on the odometer. Don't get me wrong, it seems like it's in really nice shape, but these just typically don't have much value. At least not in my area. They just have an unspoken stigma of being disposable cars, which is why they disappeared off the streets so fast. Plus, if it sat for any amount of time, a 25 year old car like that is going to require some freshening up with new belts, hoses and other items that typically degrade over time. There's no mention about new parts or it being regularly driven.
Some people hear about the shortage of new cars and the run up of prices on used cars and think they can cash in on any old car sitting in the yard that is in running condition.
Yup. Way overpriced and ultimately it's a '90s GM product, which anyone who has had one can tell you are not super high on quality and longevity. They cost too much new and deteriorated in value almost instantly and deteriorated in their condition as quickly if you neglected them in any way. At least this car doesn't have the awful Ecotec engine with its oiling issues, so the chances of surviving neglected oil changes and maintenance goes up with this era. The other half had one of these cars and it was a nightmare of repairs and one thing after another breaking (see: cheap cars and cheap plastic). Still a small car at a not-small price. $5k is more in line what I'd see a Toyota or Honda of the era go for - and wouldn't feel like I overpaid for those like I would if I had with this car. I am sure people like them and want them, but they aren't that in demand and there are way better options for a commuter car or for your teenagers. For like $2500 or so it would be much easier to swallow, especially if starts to fall apart in a year or two.
The car features the very definition of ugly front and back ends. We can see the front end above. Here's the rear. Who's the designer who came up with this, showed it to his boss, and the boss said, "looks great! Let's go with it!"
This one is not going anywhere. Seems everybody understands you can get better and far newer cheap wheels for the price. I'd say seller would need to half the price to move this car.
