That "V8" the seller says it has will most likely turn out to be a 3.8 liter V6. V8's were not available on these. Standard engine was the 3.3 liter (200 cubic inches) straight 6, with only the 3.8 V6 being optional. Now on the Cougar XR-7, you COULD get a V8, but it didn't come as a wagon, only a 2-door.
Marshall, are you sure you couldn't get a 4.2 (two-fiddy-five) V8 in these wagons? I could've swore I remember looking at one that had a V8 in one a few years back. But I'm not sure.....(?)
OK, did a little research. In an answer to your question about the 4.2 (255 cubic inch) V8 being available in these wagons, I would have to say (so far....) - No. The 4.2 V8 WAS available in the fox-body Granada, Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar and Cougar XR-7 for the 1981 model year, but there were no Granada or Cougar wagons that year. For 1982, when the wagons were introduced, the engine offerings were changed. The 3.3 liter straight six was standard, across the board. (The 2.3 liter 4-cylinder had been standard in the base Granada and Cougar sedans in '81). The 3.8 V6 was optional across the board, and you could only get the 4.2 V8 in the Cougar XR-7, and I assume the Thunderbird as well. Now, there IS a possibility that FMC made the 4.2 V8 an option for the Granada and 'regular' Cougars later in the model year, but I honestly don't remember seeing or reading about one of these fox-body Granada or Cougar wagons with a factory V8. If you were OK with something older and plainer, the early Fairmont and Zephyr wagons COULD be had with the venerable 302 V8 in '78 and '79, being replaced by the 4.2 V8 for 1980. No more V8's in the Fairmont and Zephyr after 1981, I believe.
Awesome info - I would assume that the little LTD's and Marquis' that came out in '83 were V6 powered only too(?)
I think '83 still had the straight 6 available. The 2.3 4 cylinder was available in the sedan, but not in the wagon. In '84-'86 the only wagon engine was the 3.8 v6.
