I can't remember, were these rear wheel drive? I think they were based on the Malibu platform, which was FWD, but for some reason I seem to recall them being set up to spin the rear tires.

Add this to the cars you don’t see anymore list. I never understood why Cadillac put their name on this

They were trying to become more European and sporty to compete with BMW and Mercedes. The Catera was a bridge they could quickly bring to market until they came out with the CTS and the other redesigned cars of the early/mid 2000's.

I had one briefly as a dealer loaner in 2000. I was underwhelmed, to put it kindly.

Darned things could barely zig. If offered one, or an Allante, I'd definitely take the Allante. At least I fit comfortably in an Allante.

I was disappointed when I learned that they were not going to come to the US with the Opel drive train, I drove a couple of the Opel's with manual transmissions in Germany, and I really liked them. Then I test drove the Cadillac version and I also was disappointed. The US spec engine, no Manual trans option, and what ever they did to the suspension to make it into a Cadillac killed a fun to drive, nice handling small sedan.
