Ding, ding, ding. I believe we have a winner. Online descriptions of the building at that location describe it as an example of the “Art Deco commercial architectural style” (Tenleytown Historical Society), “free-standing and polygonal in shape, following the irregular alignment and sloping contours of the streets” (DC Preservation Organization), and “the first big department store in Tenleytown, with an unprecedented 300-car parking lot on the top of the building” (Tenley View, “DC Historical Sites Worth Discovery”). Pix show the “SEARS” sign at the top of the curved front corner, with the letters rising just above the wall and flagpoles on either side, as well as a solid wall behind and on either side of the Sears sign, and, farther down the side, a wall with cut-out openings just below the top of the wall. Built in 1941, it was abandoned by Sears in the 90s. The original ground floor remains, with retail stores at ground level, but condos have been built above.

According to information found at Canadian Racer, in 1951, Dayus Raceway was located in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, across the Detroit river from the City it was named after. The facility began hosting races on property sited near the intersection of McDougall St and Howard Ave. The track was constructed by Frank Dayus after he lost his franchise for the Windsor International Baseball Team.


The quarter-mile oval dirt Raceway with three turns each with a different radius was built on the same property that the ball field was located on and open bleachers (visible in the photo above courtesy of Canadian Racer) were added. Dayus Raceway was paved in 1954 and operated until it closed for good in 1958. As late as 2004 sections of the track that had escaped development and survived up to that point are visible here (scroll down.)

How about some Norman Rockwell art

 

I have loved Normal Rockwell's art since I was a kid. I don't think I could ever get tired of looking at it.

 

The Burney R-100 Rear-Engined Streamline was designed and built in England by Sir Charles Dennison Burney who earlier engineered the R-100 airship. Next turning to automobiles, he came up with this interesting Streamline design based on a modified Alvis chassis.

Only about a dozen R-100’s were built at Maidenhead, Berkshire, UK between 1929 to ’31, the most notable purchaser being the Prince of Wales, none are known to have survived. Production cars were fitted with either Armstrong-Siddeley or Beverley-Barnes, engines, and one with straight eight Lycoming power.


After failing to find someone to license and produce the machine in America, Burney sold the patents to Crossley in 1933, who built twenty-five Crossley-Burney’s using their own two-liter engine before ending its production in 1936.

The unique vehicle featured: front and rear independent suspension, twin radiators, hydraulic brakes, a heater, seating for seven, a spare wheel inside of one rear door, and a cocktail cabinet in other. The underside was covered with sheet metal to enhance its aerodynamic efficiency. It was priced at around $1850 (£1,500.)
