Ok in full honesty here, I can't remember where this thing went to or what it was for. It has a fitting on the end of the line like for a brake or power steering. If I do need it I want to buy a new one but don't know what it's called. I also want to replace the throttle bracket, hence why I am interested if i even need it. I pulled the engine 3 years ago to have the engine rebuilt and it has been sitting since the rebuilt. But now I am working on getting the engine ready to put back into the car and i'm moving parts over to engine, for the life of me I can't figure it out! Some reason my minding is saying power steering but that just doesn't make since. Thanks in advance, the people in the forum are awesome! I can't wait to post photo of my wagon back on the road!
Ok i just checked my old power steering pump and looks like it's something for the power steering. But the new pump does not have the port for this thing. So do I need it? Old Pump: New Pump:
As I see it, your old pump shows two ports (all pumps have to have two, of course), and so it looks like you'll need to remove the big hex fitting from the old pump, transfer it to the new pump, then remove the plastic cap with the Maltese Cross on it, and find both lines to attach to the pump.
Of course, be careful, as that has the pressure relief valve and relief valve spring--I wouldn't want you to have a 'spring surprise."
So the thing in the first photo on the original post is a pressure release valve? And it has to be hooked up? My pump has one the pressure line that connects to where the plastic tab is and the return line goes to the reservoir. So there is my two lines for the pump to operate. Since the new pump has a blank bolt in do I realy have to swap it out and add the pressure relief thing?
Oh, the return goes into the reservoir directly? Well, of course it does! But it doesn't explain why your old pump has two ports. Other than Hydroboost, in general, I can't think of another accessory that runs off steering hydraulic fluid. So why does your old pump have two ports?
The second port connects to that part that is in the original post. Hence why I'm trying to figure out if I realy need it, I would prefer not to add it back if I dont need it. Yes the return goes into the reservoir.
Have you looked under the hood to remind yourself what all's there? I had pics of Babe's engine compartment so I could remember what repairs were needed.
I have found that that it is a unit that would increase your idle when turning if the car is not moving. Most of them stopped working and no one knows where you can get a replacement. It is not required with the new pump I got. Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this. I talked to a friend who found out from an old timer what this was for. He would just pinch off the and crimp the hard line.
Jeez, even I'm impressed that someone thought about trying to boost pressure for turning at a standstill.
Interesting, I would never have thought of that as its purpose. I would just plug the ports and leave it all off.
Besides, cars now have radial tires that hold more air, making turning much easier, even with manual 'Armstrong' steering. I've only driven two vehicles with bias tires, and they were scary.
