Because I have a few memories of the 4-door we had when I was a kid, my favorite Chevrolet has always been the '59. I honestly wish GM had not been on that "new design every year" jag back then, simply because one year's production didn't ensure enough survivors.
Yes it's hard to imagine the design and tooling costs incurred back then, to have a totally different car every year. Even though 59 and 60s were similar, still two totally different cars. When you look at the evolution of the car between the 57 and the 61, amazing. My grandfather worked at Fisher body, when all the models were Fab from wood, during this period. On the subject of station wagons, he has the wooden models for the vents that were on the upper rear quarters of a Corvair wagon. Thanks Dave
I would have love to have been a fly on the wall at the bar in the Detroit Athletic Club. You know those designers would get in their cups and talk about what next big fin, or chrome Speer they were slathering on their next models. Would love to have seen the cocktail napkins that were drawn on and picked up at the end of the night.
